Gustav (Friedrich) Herrmann (born December 19, 1836 in Halle (Saale) , † June 13, 1907 in Aachen ) was a German mechanical engineer and rector of RWTH Aachen University .

Live and act

After graduating from high school, Herrmann studied from 1855 at the former royal trade institute in Berlin, now the Technical University of Berlin , and graduated in 1859 with an engineering degree . He then gained practical experience in industry as a civil engineer , was taken on as a lecturer at the Bergakademie Berlin from 1868 and on October 1, 1870, accepted a call to the newly opened Polytechnic Aachen, today's RWTH Aachen. Here he was first employed as a lecturer and from 1872 as a full professor for mechanical technology , for construction machinery and factories in the faculty of mechanical engineering and also headed the "Technological Collection". During the following 33 to 34 years of his professorship, his initiative also added the fields of production engineering and machine tools . From this later developed after his retirement in 1906, among other things, the machine tool laboratory WZL of the RWTH Aachen, founded by Adolf Wallichs . In the meantime Herrmann headed the university from 1889 to 1892 as the successor to Ernst Friedrich Dürre, also as rector and was then promoted to the secret government council.

Herrmann's main tasks were primarily the continuation and revision of Julius Weisbach's textbook on engineering and machine mechanics, as well as the graphical treatment of mechanical engineering problems. In addition, Herrmann was a member of the district association of the VDI , an honorary member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and other scientific associations, and was honored with an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Karlsruhe in 1903 for his services to the introduction of graphic methods in mechanical engineering.
