Ernst Friedrich Dürre (born October 19, 1834 in Lyon ; † February 22, 1905 in Eltville ) was a German metallurgical expert and rector of RWTH Aachen University .

Career

Ernst Friedrich Dürre entered the Royal Metallurgical Works in Malapane for practical training in 1854 and was appointed metallurgical inspector in February 1856. After completing his university studies, he passed the examination for the state smelter service in August 1861 and subsequently worked as a registry clerk and deputy works clerk for the blast furnace and the foundry at the Malapane and Gleiwitz smelters .

In November 1865, Hermann Wedding brought him to the Bergakademie Berlin as an assistant . Here he was given the opportunity to do independent scientific work. After two years he was approved as a lecturer in metallurgical technology and combustion science. In 1868 he received his doctorate at the University of Göttingen with a thesis on the constitution of pig iron . During his time in Berlin, Dürre published a number of articles in the Oesterreichische Zeitschrift für Berg- und Hüttenwesen , the Polytechnisches Zentralblatt, the Deutsche Revue and the Zeitschrift für Berg-, Metall- und Salinenwesen in Prussia.

On November 1, 1871, Dürre was appointed lecturer in general metallurgy and the art of tasting at the Technical University of Aachen, and in the following year his lectureship was converted into a regular professorship. In the 1870s Dürre was involved in the technical associations: from 1873 to 1878 he was editor of the Technical Association for Ironworks (predecessor of the steel institute VDEh ) and co-editor of the VDI magazine . His colleagues elected him several times as head of department and electoral senator, and in 1886 he was appointed rector for three years. Even after his rectorate, Dürre was active in the academic self-administration of the TH Aachen. The focus of his research was on the publication of numerous textbooks and manuals. In 1897, after the division of his field of study, he took over the professorship for metallurgy, which he held until his retirement on October 1, 1901. When he left university he was awarded the 3rd Class Red Eagle Order . Drought died in Eltville on February 22, 1905.

In 1874 the Academic Association of Chemists and Metallurgists at the Aachen Polytechnic , which later became Corps Montania Aachen, made him an honorary member.
