Hermann Bonin (born August 15, 1880 in Landsberg an der Warthe , † April 10, 1945 in Jena ) was a German mechanical engineer , university professor and rector of the Technical University of Aachen .

Life

After graduating from high school, Hermann Bonin studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University (Berlin-) Charlottenburg from 1898 to 1903 , where he graduated in 1904 with a degree in engineering. As assistant to the steam engine specialist Johannes Stumpf , he received his doctorate in Berlin in 1913. On September 1 of the same year, Bonin was appointed to the Technical University of Aachen, where he took over the teaching areas of steam engines , steam boilers and work machines as well as heating and ventilation systems as a full professor and, from 1919, the teaching area of steam turbines at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Bonin stayed here until his death in 1945 and, in the meantime, succeeded August Schwemann as head of the university from 1924 to 1926 as its rector. In addition, he headed the Aachen district association of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) as chairman in 1927 and as deputy in 1928/29 .

Bonin's main areas of research and work were the experimental determination of the degree of non-uniformity ; Heating power and efficiency of iron stoves as well as heating technology basics for the economic efficiency of the iron stove.

Although Bonin was verifiably not a member of the NSDAP , SS or SA during the National Socialist era , he was still busy in 1933 with Hubert Hoff , Felix Rötscher Adolf Wallichs and Robert Hans Wentzel, among other things, checking the denunciation cases that the ASTA ( General Student Committee ) and the student leaders were reported on the basis of alleged communist ideas or behavior critical of the regime by colleagues and students. By forwarding these reports to the Reich Commissioner in the Reich Ministry for Science, Education and Public Education Bernhard Rust , the non- Aryan professors Otto Blumenthal , Arthur Guttmann , Walter Fuchs , Ludwig Hopf , Theodore von Kármán , Paul Ernst Levy , Karl Walter Mautner , Alfred Meusel , Leopold Karl Pick , Rudolf Ruer , Hermann Salmang and Ludwig Strauss withdrew their teaching license from September 1933 under the law to restore the civil service .
