Michael Jansen (archaeologist)

Michael Jansen (* 1947 in Koserow ) is a German architectural historian and archaeologist .

Jansen studied physics and mathematics in 1967 at the University of Bonn . He moved to RWTH Aachen University in 1968 and studied architecture and building history until 1973. In 1974 he went to the University of Rome for further studies , where he studied building history and archeology . In 1976 he studied South Asian archeology at Delhi University and the Archaeological Survey of India . In 1979 he received his doctorate in Aachen with the thesis "Architecture of the Harappa Culture ". From 1978 to 1987 he was project manager of the DFG research project 'Mohenjo-Daro' in collaboration with Günter Urban . From 1988 to 1993 he was a university lecturer at RWTH Aachen University.

Jansen has been a university professor for urban history at RWTH Aachen University since 1994 . From 1994 to 1996 Jansen was Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University. His main research interests include the Indus culture ( Mohenjo-Daro ), colonial architecture in South Asia , archeology and architecture in Southeast Arabia and Central Asia , cities of the early modern period and Carolingian architecture .
