Gernot Güntherodt

Gernot Güntherodt (born April 27, 1943 in Themar , Thuringia ) is a German physicist and professor emeritus for experimental physics at RWTH Aachen University .

Life

Gernot Güntherodt, brother of Hans-Joachim Güntherodt , received a diploma in physics from the ETH Zurich in 1968 and also received his doctorate in 1973 from the ETH Zurich. After postdoctoral stays at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center at IBM and at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, he got a permanent position at the MPI in 1977. In 1979 an appointment at the University of Cologne followed . From 1987 until his retirement in 2012 he headed the 2nd Physics Institute, Chair A, at RWTH Aachen University .

Gernot Güntherodt is particularly known for his research on correlated electron systems, nanomagnetism and spin electronics . His research results are recorded in almost 500 publications.

Güntherodt has been chairman of the magnetism working group in the German Physical Society since 2009 . He was co-editor of several journals in physics. In 2009 the American Physical Society made him a Fellow .
