Roland Wiesendanger (born October 5, 1961 in Basel ) is a German physicist who works particularly in the field of scanning tunneling microscopy .

Life

Wiesendanger grew up in Lörrach and attended the Hans-Thoma-Gymnasium from 1972 to 1981 . In 1981 he began studying physics , mathematics and astronomy at the University of Basel . As early as 1984 he was occupied with scanning tunneling microscopy. In 1986 he graduated with the best possible overall grade and a year later he did his doctorate in experimental physics with “summa cum laude” on the subject of scanning tunneling microscopy on non-crystalline solids . Until his habilitation (1990), he built the surface analysis system NANOLAB-I, a system that could research the surfaces of materials on an atomic scale in a variety of ways (structure, electronic and magnetic properties).

In 1992 he was appointed full professor for experimental solid state physics at the University of Hamburg in connection with the establishment of the Hamburg Center for Microstructure Research. Since then, Wiesendanger has been working on various research topics and projects in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

As a university professor in Hamburg he has held a position since 1993 a. a. the Hamburg Center for Microstructure Research, a nanotechnology competence center and the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center Hamburg and was the spokesman for the DFG special research area 668 Magnetism from Single Atom to Nanostructure from 2006 to 2017 .

Since 2000 he has been a member of the National Academy Leopoldina , since 2005 a member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg and since 2008 a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) . In 2012 he received an honorary professorship from the Harbin Institute of Technology in China and an honorary doctorate from the Poznan University of Technology in 2015 .

Wiesendanger has organized numerous international conferences such as the Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM'97) conference in Hamburg (1997) or the 1st Hamburg Otto Stern Symposium (2013). Conversely, he was himself an invited speaker of well over 500 lectures worldwide. He is the author or co-author of over 600 original scientific publications as well as numerous books and book articles.

Awards and memberships (selection)

Wiesendanger is recognized worldwide as an expert in nanoscience and was the first scientist in Europe to win an ERC Advanced Grant from the European Research Council three times in a row. Furthermore, he was u. a. In 2003 he was awarded the Philip Morris Research Prize for his research work on “Ultimate Magnetic Microscopy” and in 2014 the first “Heinrich Rohrer Grand Medal”. In the laudation for the Julius Springer Prize for Applied Physics (2016), his pioneering work on spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and magnetic exchange force microscopy, which make it possible to study the magnetism of individual atoms on surfaces and the spin structure of solids with atomic spatial resolution, were highlighted.
