Life

René von Schöfer was the son of the Imperial and Royal Legation Councilor a. D. Julius von Schöfer and Ella geb. Pohl. The family belonged to the Austrian knighthood. After attending the Benedictine grammar school in Ödenburg and the Theresianum in Vienna , he studied law and political science from 1902 to 1904 and switched to the University of Budapest in 1904 , where he completed his studies in 1906 and then passed the first and second state exams. In 1903 he became a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn . From 1907 to 1911 he studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich . On behalf of the German Archaeological Institute, he undertook extensive architectural and archaeological studies in Pompeii from 1911 to 1914 and was assistant to Theodor Fischer at the TH Munich from 1920 to 1926 . Through his building recordings of the Casa del Fauno in Pompeii , he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. PhD. In the same year he accepted a professorship for design, building design, urban planning and building design at RWTH Aachen University . In 1935 he became dean of the Faculty of Construction. In 1937 he turned down a call to the Technical University of Stuttgart . In 1943 he retired, but continued to teach until 1951. Erich Kühn became his successor.

Shaped by Theodor Fischer, Schöfer represented factual forms and surfaces in architecture, rejecting the ornament of the Wilhelminian era. Its construction planning for the city of Jülich after the Second World War was of particular importance . Together with Otto Gruber , Hans Mehrtens and Hans Schwippert, in a modification of the Stuttgart School, he is a representative of the Aachen School .

Von Schöfer's academic students included: a. the architecture professor Maria Schwarz , his assistant, the city planning department and architect in Aachen, Prof. Dr. Ing.Wilhelm Kaspar Fischer, and his co-worker, the architect and construction officer Karlheinz Sundermann .

Schöfer was married to Elisabeth von Schubert. They had two sons.
