The House of the Faun ( Italian Casa del Fauno ) is one of the most famous houses in the ancient city of Pompeii , which was buried when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. With an area of 2490 m², it is the largest private house in the city and was excavated in the years 1830–1832. It extends over almost the entire insula 12 of the region VI .

The house is named after the bronze statue of a dancing faun found on the northern edge of the impluvium . The original of the statue is in the National Museum in Naples , the copy was (as is now believed, incorrectly) placed in the middle of the impluvium. The house was particularly elegant thanks to the relief-like decoration of the walls in the atrium , which even represented an imaginary upper floor, as well as the geometrically arranged garden.

The "House of the Faun" was built at the beginning of the 2nd century BC. And extensively rebuilt at the end of the same century. For example, the old atrium house was expanded with peristyle courtyards (the model for this was the Hellenistic Orient), the thermal baths were relocated to the kitchen area and the wall paintings were renewed. The most important renovation, however, was the installation of several Alexandrian-influenced mosaics - particularly the Alexander mosaic , which depicts Alexander the great in a battle.

Other unusual mosaics can be found in the adjoining rooms of the peristyle: The love game between a faunus and a bacchante , as well as a fish mosaic.

Several shops were embedded in the front of the house, separated from one another by coarse pillars or so-called half-columns. The written greeting “have” can still be read on the sidewalk in front of the entrance.
