Hans Mehrtens

Johannes Friedrich Wilhelm Mertens (born December 5, 1892 in Schwelm ; † 1976 in Aachen ) was a German architect and university professor . He was one of the leading architects in the Rhineland .

Life

Mehrtens completed his architecture studies at the Technical University of Stuttgart in 1921 with a diploma. He then worked for Paul Bonatz and Adolf Abel , who were both teaching in Stuttgart at the time and who had a major impact on the Stuttgart school . He then worked for the Upper Silesian Housing and Settlement Welfare Service Opole and the planning department of the Bochumer Verein . From 1925 to 1935, Mehrten was the city planner in Cologne . From 1930 he was the head of the Cologne Building Department.

In 1935, Mehrtens, who had previously joined the NSDAP , was appointed full professor to the chair for structural and industrial design at RWTH Aachen University, which he held until his retirement in 1961 and was provisional head until 1964. From 1940 to 1942 Mehrtens, who in the meantime had been designated as the “trusted architect ” of the NSDAP and was involved in the National Socialist German Lecturer Association, was head of the building design working group in the Cologne / Aachen district . During this time, his expertise in the construction of war-related structures such as the planning of an armaments factory for the air force near Danzig or for the tank production of Deutsche Edelstahlwerke AG in Krefeld was used. In addition, from 1943 Mehrtens belonged together with Hermann Proetel , Robert Hans Wentzel , Peter Mennicken and Robert Roessing to the Working Group for Spatial Planning under Hermann Roloff , which, on behalf of the secret organization Mittelstelle für Heimatschutz, gave the possibility of expanding the responsibilities of the university to those still occupied Western neighboring countries should organize. In the last years of the war he was appointed dean by his incumbent rector, Hans Ehrenberg . From 1944 he was responsible for the reconstruction planning of Aachen on the task force for the reconstruction of bombed-out cities .

After the war, Mehrtens became director of the Institute for School Construction at RWTH Aachen University in 1957. He was succeeded by Fritz Eller in 1962 .
