Baumeister has been a specialist magazine for architects that has been published since 1902 . In addition to architecture, the magazine deals with urban development and landscape planning.

Long-time editors and senior editors were Hermann Jansen until 1929 , Guido Harbers from 1929 to 1945 , Rudolf Pfister from 1945 to 1959 and Paulhans Peters from 1960 to 1991 . Until 2011, the master builder was Wolfgang Bachmann's responsibility . The editor-in-chief has been Alexander Gutzmer since February 2011 .

Baumeister is published by Callwey Verlag in Munich . In the first few decades the magazine was printed in small print runs in A3 format; it was divided into an illustrated editorial section, an advertisement section and an appendix of panels, which were often produced using the high-quality collotype printing process. The design of the magazine was adapted to contemporary tastes at irregular intervals: the cover images of the first issues were still influenced by Art Nouveau, in 1907 a classic typography was taken up again. In 1927 the cover was redesigned by Paul Renner , who also designed the publisher's logo. In 1930 Lois Welzenbacher made a change . The conservative design of the late 1930s was not thoroughly modernized until the late 1950s.

Since the redesign in November 2011, each issue has been divided into the categories “Heads”, “Ideas”, “Questions” and “Solutions”. In recent years, the builder has received numerous awards, including the Lead Awards , the Red Dot Design Award , the German Design Award , the IF Design Awards , the Art Directors Club and the New York Type Directors Club competition .

The monthly print run is around 20,500 copies.
