Grenelle , formerly an independent municipality of the former Seine department , has been the 59th of the 80 quarters of the city of Paris since 1860 . It is located in the southwest of the city on the left bank of the Seine called Rive Gauche and belongs to the 15th arrondissement of Paris .

The French Ministry of Labor is traditionally based in the Hôtel du Châtelet on Rue de Grenelle. The term “Grenelle” is therefore used synonymously for the ministry in France, similar to “ Quai d'Orsay ” for the French foreign ministry . In May 1968 the "Grenelle Agreement" between the government, employers' associations and unions was negotiated here, a turning point in the May riots .

This “Grenelle Agreement” is still the namesake for top-level discussions between politics and associations. Among other things, the government had scheduled an "environmental summit", a Grenelle de l'environnement , for October 2007 .
