Karlheinz Sundermann (born June 20, 1922 in Coesfeld ; † October 6, 1998 there ) was a German architect and North Rhine-Westphalian construction clerk .

Live and act

Karlheinz Sundermann grew up in Coesfeld. His father Heinrich August Sundermann was a farmer's son from Merfeld (today: Dülmen-Merfeld) and worked in the district office of Coesfeld from 1909 to 1945, his mother's father Josefine Berta Sundermann nee. After graduating from high school in 1940 at the municipal high school Nepomucenum Coesfeld and early discharge from military service, Karlheinz Sundermann first studied in 1942/43 as a student vacationer in the Wehrmacht and then from 1944 to 1948 architecture at the RWTH Aachen (among others with Profs. Anton Wendling , Otto Gruber , René von Schöfer , Hans Mehrtens and Hans Schwippert ). In the meantime, he worked in the construction department of the Westphalia farmers' association in Münster in 1943/44 and 1944/45. After his main diploma examination in 1948, he worked together with the assistant of René von Schöfer, the architect BDA Wilhelm Kaspar Fischer, in the Aachen city building department on the reconstruction planning (general development plan) and in its office (reconstruction of the Salvatorkirche Aachen ); from 1951 to 1952 in the Recklinghausen State Building Authority, he carried out the new construction of the Marl District Court.

After his construction traineeship , he joined the senior civil service of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as a construction assessor and representative of the board of the State Building Authority II at the end of 1953 , built the ear, nose and throat clinic of the University of Münster and from 1956 to 1962 as the first board member of the state building management in Region of Münster the new authorities house Alter Steinweg (1959) in the vicinity of the war-ravaged Dominican Church Cathedral , with architect Bernhard M. Geisberg the Landesfeuerwehrschule Munster, with architect Walter Baumewerd and his son Dieter Georg Baumewerd the Supreme administrative court .

From 1962 to 1965, Karlheinz Sundermann was in charge of the Recklinghausen State Building Authority, and from 1965 to 1970, the supervisory authority in the Münster administrative district. During this time he promoted reconstruction, architecture and art in architecture of post-war modernism as the monument in Münsterland (u. A. Anholt ).

Between 1968 and 1986 he was responsible for the technical issues of urban development and the preservation of monuments in the Detmold administrative district . He spoke out in favor of expanding the government service building in Detmold. In Ostwestfalen-Lippe he was particularly committed to:

the planning and construction of the concert hall of the Detmold University of Music in the Palaisgarten Detmold,
the preservation of the Lippischer Hof monument (1726) in the course of the expansion of Hornschen Strasse,
the establishment of the Reform University of Bielefeld ,
the conversion of the industrial monument Alte Ravensberger Spinnerei in Bielefeld ,
the revitalization and urban renewal of the historic city centers in East Westphalia-Lippe, in particular the old Hanseatic city of Lemgo, and the adoption of the NRW Monument Protection Act.

He was a member of the art commission of the Archdiocese of Paderborn . Karlheinz Sundermann was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in 1982 because of his pioneering commitment to monument protection - in particular the preservation and revitalization of historic town centers and town centers in East Westphalia-Lippe .
