The Ravensberger Spinnerei is a former flax spinning mill in Bielefeld in the Mitte district . Today, the converted factory buildings house the Bielefeld Adult Education Center, the Bielefeld Historical Museum, a discotheque , the municipal regulatory office, a cinema and a museum of applied arts.

history

Hermann Delius

Various younger entrepreneurs around Hermann Delius or August Wilhelm Kisker founded a stock corporation in 1854, in which several Bielefeld linen dealers were involved. The Ravensberger spinning mill was built between 1855 and 1857. Ferdinand Kaselowsky set up , planned and managed the company for the first few decades . In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was one of the largest flax mills in Europe. Due to the structural change in the 1960s, the spinning mill had to severely restrict its operations, and finally give up completely in 1974.

The city of Bielefeld had already acquired the site in 1968 and was planning a large intersection there as part of a "car-friendly" traffic concept. Among other things, the castle-like main building would have fallen victim to this project. A citizens' initiative was able to prevent this after years of protests; the complex was preserved as an industrial monument . The extensive renovation of the main building, into which the adult education center moved in 1986, was awarded the European Monument Preservation Prize. With the addition of facilities, the site has become a cultural focus of the city.

The buildings of the former spinning mill are embedded in the Ravensberger Park , which was built around 1900 and which is partly used for events. In 1978 part of the park was renamed Rochdale Park on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the partnership between Bielefeld and Rochdale . In the park, which is an industrial monument as a whole , there is also the Historical Museum with a focus on the history of Bielefeld and the region of East Westphalia. The director's garden with pond and fountain in the style of an English landscape garden was largely restored to the original.

historical Museum

The Bielefeld Historical Museum was opened in 1994 in a former production hall of the spinning mill. The permanent exhibition shows the historical development of the city of Bielefeld. In addition, there are everyday objects from the lives of workers and the city in bygone times.

Lightwork

Bielefeld's youngest art house cinema is located in the listed building of the "old carpentry" in Ravensberger Park. The cinema started operating on January 19, 2006 in the completely renovated building with three cinemas and a total of 276 seats. The light work is u. a. run by the non-profit association Filmhaus Bielefeld , which already housed the “old lightworks” in August-Bebel-Strasse and sees itself as the first point of contact for film and video enthusiasts and media professionals in the region.

Huelsmann Museum

In the former director's villa, built in 1865, is the prominent private collection of the art dealer couple Huelsmann . This collection of European handicrafts became the property of the City of Bielefeld in 1984 as a foundation. The Huelsmann Museum was opened in the renovated director's villa on June 10, 1995. Exhibits from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism up to the beginning of the 19th century are shown here.

The museum administration and the library are housed in the neighboring coach house. Since 2005, special exhibitions have also been regularly presented in the White Villa . Since 2014, the collection from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day has been shown in a permanent exhibition in the basement of the White Villa.
