Dieter Georg Baumewerd
Dieter Georg Baumewerd (born July 13, 1932 in Braunsberg / East Prussia ; † December 19, 2015 ) was a German architect who was best known for his church buildings.
life and work
Dieter Georg Baumewerd experienced his childhood in Frauenburg in the Archdiocese of Warmia . His father Walter Baumewerd (1900–1962) worked there as a cathedral and diocesan architect. After the family fled to Münster and apprenticeship as a painter (1948–1951), Dieter Georg Baumewerd worked as a journeyman painter, trained as an architectural draftsman (1953–1955) in his father's architecture office and then began studying architecture at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf .
Baumewerd studied craft theory and design with Hans Schwippert , church and town planning with Rudolf Schwarz . He became his master student and dealt with the sacred building. Together with Ludwig Tiepelmann and Paul Eling, he worked on Rudolf Schwarz's design in the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf competition (1960, 2nd place). After the death of his father, he completed the new building of the higher administrative court in Münster after winning the competition (1958–1962) and took over its office.
In 1963 Baumewerd won the competition to build the new Holy Spirit Church in Emmerich . In 1965 he was awarded the sponsorship prize for young artists in the architecture section of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1966 he completed the construction work on the church, which he built according to the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), designed with the painter Fred Thieler , the sculptors Waldemar Kuhn (cross) and Rudolf Knubel (portal).
As part of the educational reform in North Rhine-Westphalia, Baumewerd took part in numerous school competitions. Together with the Appels engineering office, he developed a flexible construction system, which he used in partnership with the architect Frisch for the new construction of the Steinfurt Engineering School (1st prize 1964, realization 1965–1976) and the general university disposal center of the University of Münster (1969–1971). For the outdoor facilities and parking spaces, he developed a design grid of trees, hedges and ramparts, which the Münster landscape architect Heinz-Günther Schulten adopted for the landscaping in Berlin-Märkisches Viertel . The art in construction continued Baumewerd with Harry Kramer order. In 1969 he won the competition for the Church and Community Center Heilig-Geist in Emsdetten, which he built with his building system.
In 1971 Baumewerd accepted a professorship for design and interior design at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences . Until his retirement in 1997 he campaigned for holistic architecture, which he developed after 1975 a. a. in the Antoniuskirche in Kevelaer, which burned down in 1982 and rebuilt in 1987 with Paul Eling, as continued building history. In his late work Baumewerd joins the architectural conceptions of the neo-rationalist Berlin school.
From 1987 to 1991 Baumewerd was state chairman of the Association of German Architects in North Rhine-Westphalia and from 1987 to 2001 a member of the working group for ecclesiastical architecture and sacred art (AKASK) of the liturgy commission of the German Bishops' Conference. He was a judge in the competition for the liturgical reorganization of St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin. He was awarded the Papal Order of Gregorius for his services to church building. The Cologne-based architect Lukas Baumewerd is his son.
