St. Antonius (Kevelaer)
The parish church of St. Antonius is a Catholic church in Kevelaer . It is under the patronage of Anthony the Great .
history
The parish of Kevelaer was created in 1472 when it was separated from the parish of Weeze . The small geostete , gothic village church, built around 1450, remained unchanged until the 19th century. The reconstructed remains of this building are integrated into today's modern church interior and are used as a chapel . A larger, magnificently designed, neo-Gothic church with the approximate floor plan of today's main building was only built after the construction of the Marienbasilika and inaugurated in 1904. The church was largely destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in 1952. In order to allow the church to meet the requirements of the 2nd Vatican Council , an extensive redesign, especially of the choir , took place in 1972 (i.e. for the 500th anniversary of the foundation of the parish) .
On January 13, 1982, the church burned to the ground; Only the outer walls of the chapel, the baptistery , the sacristy , the choir and the tower remained. Dieter Georg Baumewerd designed the modern new building on a historical floor plan . Well-known artists such as Theo Heiermann , Bert Gerresheim and Joachim Klos created the furnishings . On January 17, 1987 the rebuilt church was consecrated by Bishop Reinhard Lettmann .
In addition to its normal use as a parish church, St. Antonius is often chosen as a place of final prayer by groups of pilgrims coming from outside due to its favorable location at the end of the park-like open-air crossroad .
Furnishing
The body of the cross above the main altar comes from the church that burned down in 1982. The charred figure of the crucified was mounted on a bronze tree of life by the artist Bert Gerresheim and is now hanging again above the altar in the choir. The stations of the cross and the Easter candlestick were also designed by Gerresheim. Theo Heiermann designed the altar. It contains relics of martyrs of the Theban Legion from the burial ground under the crypt of the Xanten St. Viktor Cathedral . The black, highly polished altar plate shows representations of the instruments of Christ's passion . The designs of the windows of the main room are from the hand of Joachim Klos from Nettetal , execution worried, based in Kevelaer stained glass -Werkstatt Derix . The font made of Namur bluestone dates from 1471.
In the outside area of the church there is a statue of the patron saint of the community, St. Anthony the Great with his traditional attributes ( St. Anthony's cross and pig). A so-called Chrismon can be seen above the side entrance . The round mosaic (made by Derix) is said to represent Christ in the symbol of the sun of justice with its golden border . Furthermore, a Jacob's figure designed by Bert Gerresheim with its shell and pilgrim staff attributes reminds of the church in constant change.
Organs
The Antonius Church has two organs from the Kevelaer-based organ building company Seifert . The smaller one, with 10 registers , is in the Antonius Chapel. The large organ for the main room dates from 1987, the year the new church was consecrated. The slider chest instrument has 42 stops on three manuals and a pedal . The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric. The instrument is located at ground level in the rear part of the southern (i.e. the right) side aisle .
