The Heilig-Geist-Kirche is a Catholic parish church in Bielefeld . It was built in Bielefeld-Dornberg in the early 1990s as the successor church to the two churches, the Holy Spirit in Wellensiek and the Holy Family , Uerentrup , which had become too small for the growing community .

history

The Heilig Geist church was built in 1990/91 according to plans by the Münster architect Professor Dieter Georg Baumewerd ; he was also involved in planning the artistic design. The architect Rainer Maria Kresing supervised the construction. The artistic design of the church ( altar , ambo , tabernacle , altar and lecture cross , baptismal font , apostle cross , eternal light , holy water bowls , consoles for tabernacles and pietà ) was carried out by the Aachen sculptor Thomas Torkler , whose idea it was also the floor in the altar area and to make the tabernacle console in the same reddish material as the font, in Italian Verona red marble (interspersed with white arabescato marble from Carrara ). The Düsseldorf sculptor Bert Gerresheim designed the Way of the Cross in the form of bronze relief panels . The consecration took place on September 15, 1991 by the Archbishop of Paderborn at the time, Johannes Joachim Degenhardt .

Heilig Geist is considered a jewel among modern churches in the East Westphalian region : the church, its furnishings and the architecturally assigned structures (parish and rectory) form a uniform building ensemble in every respect and an outstanding testimony to church construction at the time of the transition from the 20th into the 21st century.

Location and municipality

The church is located on a 4200 square meter property on Spandauer Allee in Bielefeld-Dornberg. The municipal area includes the Bielefeld districts Großdornberg , Kirchdornberg , Wellensiek , Hoberge-Uerentrup , Babenhausen and Niederdornberg-Deppendorf as well as parts of Gellershagen and Schröttinghausen . Since July 1, 2004, the parish of the Holy Spirit and the parish of Christkönig have formed the pastoral association in the West of Bielefeld of the Bielefeld-Lippe dean's office in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

Architecture and equipment

Floor plan and external dimensions

Community center floor plan

An essential element in the design of the exterior and interior of the church is the octagonal (octagonal) floor plan, a shape that was often chosen in early Christianity because of the symbolic meaning of the number eight for sacred buildings. One saw a symbol of divine perfection in the octagon radiating harmony.

The outer basic dimension of the octagon is 21 meters, the external height of the church building 22 meters. The free-standing bell tower has a base area of 6 by 6 meters and a height of 26 meters.

Inside the church, the octagon shape is emphasized by eight load-bearing columns cast from concrete and polished. The character of the interior is particularly shaped by four tent-shaped structures: All four axes of symmetry of the church run towards delimiting spatial structures, which are reminiscent of large oriental tents with their slender, protruding walls and roofs and are intended to be perceived as four prominent places where God can meet: When entering the In the church, the first thing you look at is the central “tent” that houses the tabernacle . On the south side, the confessional room is designed as a “tent”. The third “tent” opposite the confessional room frames the organ . The portal of the church leads through the fourth “tent”, paradise or the narthex .

Altar island

Sanctuary

The octagonal shape of the church made it possible to create a round altar island as the center. On it stands the altar made of terce blanc, a white French sand-lime brick , surrounded by a stainless steel band with the canteen (altar plate) of the former parish church of the Holy Family. Thomas Torkler designed the entire chancel.

altar

The structure of the altar gives the impression of a resting pole. All four sides of the stone are tapered to a point and appear slightly raised. In this way they approximate the shape of the outer tips of the Jewish altar stone, known as "altar horns", which the persecuted had to grasp in order to obtain the right to asylum. In the side of the altar facing the church entrance is a shrine with a relic of the Blessed Pauline von Mallinkrodt.

Ambo

The ambo (lectern) is matched to the altar in terms of its material, terce blanc, and its shape; in this way it forms a kind of second altar and with it and the tabernacle a triangle.

Altar and lecture cross

Altar and lecture cross

Next to the altar is a symbolic cross, designed by Thomas Torkler in 1998 as an altar and lecture cross ; it represents a commitment to life: the cross beam is designed as green, living wood, as a tree of life made of bronze with leaves. But not only the green trunk testifies to a commitment to life, but also the figure of Jesus, the crucifixus . It is completely fused with the shape of the cross and forms the shape of the cross itself. The outstretched hands of Jesus on the cross remind us that God's hand created everything and carries life in all its diversity.

Upper front panel of the cross

To deepen this idea, the sculptor added rectangular fields at the four end points of the cross, which contain symbolic images: The signs above the trunk of the cross make it clear that the invisible God is much more than the visibility of Jesus. A triangle, the oldest abstract symbol for Trinity, is framed by characters, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet , the Hebrew and Arabic languages as well as Sanskrit .

The ends of the crossbar are highlighted by four attached hands of God: the whole globe lies in the first hand from which the world emerged. The second hand represents that God created the universe and every single human being. In the third hand there are four signs of suffering: an erupting volcano shows people suffering from the forces of nature; two figures that belong together but are separate from each other mean separation in marriage, from friends, between parents and children. The fourth hand means: Baptism and confirmation also come from God's hand. The field below the trunk of the cross and its back represent the Golgotha with stones embedded in the bronze mountain hatching from partner countries and home countries of parishioners.

Apart from the bronze reliefs of the Way of the Cross, no images of saints are provided for in the structural concept of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche. Only on the three remaining fields on the back of the cross did the sculptor depict models in faith that were selected by the members of the congregation as important for them ( Mary Magdalene with an ointment vessel, Evangelist John with book and Apostle Paul with a staff, Francis of Assisi with Birds, Elisabeth of Thuringia with a basket of roses and Maximilian Kolbe with wire mesh, Pope Johannes XXIII. , Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa ). Each field also contains a figure that is only sketchily indicated. It stands for a model of faith that each viewer chooses for himself.

Tabernacle and Eternal Light

In the "tent" erected on the east side of the church, opposite the altar island, the tabernacle stands on a stele also made of terce blanc , and the eternal light burns on a marble base made of Verona red marble to the left . The tabernacle comes from the former Holy Spirit Church and was provided with an artistically newly designed bronze relief as the front, which shows how the two Emmaus disciples recognize the risen Jesus Christ by the breaking of bread (cf. Luke 24: 13-35) .

Pietà

On the pillar erected to the right of the tabernacle and altar island is a carved wooden Pietà on a metal console , which comes from the earlier Holy Family Church and was probably built in the early 20th century.

Baptismal font

The baptismal font to the left of the altar island was created in 1995 by Thomas Torkler. It has a square floor plan and consists of the Italian Verona red marble used throughout the altar area. Four biblical scenes cast in bronze adorn the fountain at the corners of the baptismal bowl. In the base of the baptismal font there is a small barred chamber for the sacred oils .

Way of the Cross

Way of the Cross by Bert Gerresheim, 5th station: “Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross”; Abbé Franz Stock was a pastor in Paris during World War II and is shown in the form of Simon.

The Way of the Cross bronze reliefs by the Düsseldorf sculptor Bert Gerresheim in the Heilig-Geist-Kirche are moving testimony to artistically expressed faith. In the 1980s Gerresheim initially only recorded the Way of the Cross in drawings. It was not until 2007 that he converted them into bronze relief panels and at the same time updated the representations by shifting accents to the Holy Spirit Church, to Christian life in Bielefeld and the Archdiocese of Paderborn and to the universal church. At the stations of suffering on Jesus' path to the cross, figures from the recent past are depicted as acting or suffering witnesses of the faith - persecuted persons of the Nazi dictatorship such as Rosa Stein , Abbé Franz Stock and Maximilian Kolbe , helmeted forces in today's clothing instead of Roman mercenaries, people in the succession of Jesus like Mother Teresa , Mother Pauline von Mallinckrodt, Friedrich von Bodelschwingh , Saint Francis and Pope John Paul II. The deeply shattering Way of the Cross of Jesus receives depressing clarity and history enduring validity through this intertwining with contemporary events and well-known people. The sculptor, who was influenced by the Franciscan movement, repeatedly used the Greek letter tau symbolically in depictions of the Way of the Cross, reminding us of St. Francis, who understood the cross in the form of a tau as a sign of blessing.

Twelve Apostle Crosses

Between the stations of the cross there are twelve apostle crosses with candlesticks. The crosses bear the names of the apostles with their symbols.

Textile murals

At different times of the church year, changing textile pictures hang down from the ceiling to the left of the altar, which were designed and designed by the artist Magdalena Hofmann-Soare. They act like windows into another world. The titles are: "The Crucifixion", "The Resurrection", "Pentecost" and "The New Jerusalem".

Church window

organ

The most striking window in the church is the round window in the east above the tabernacle, which catches the eye as soon as you enter the church. Designed by the well-known glass painter Wilhelm Buschulte from Unna , it was made by the Peters glass painting company in Paderborn . It shows the meeting of above and below, heaven and earth according to Gen 1: 2: "And God's spirit floated over the waters" . In the window gallery and in the crowning lantern , stained glass windows designed by Dieter Georg Baumewerd and also executed by Peters stained glass reflect the upward movement of the columns. The coloring refers on the one hand to the patronage of the church consecrated to the Holy Spirit - the color row from red to yellow is reminiscent of the flames of the Holy Spirit, of which the story of Pentecost tells ( Acts 2,1-13) - on the other hand with the color green on life.

organ

In 1997 the organ building company Johannes Klais in Bonn was commissioned to build an 18- register mechanical organ , which was consecrated on September 26, 1999.

Bells

Six bells hang in the tower's wooden belfry , which were cast by the traditional bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher. In 1991 pastor and bell expert of the Archdiocese of Paderborn, Dr. Gerhard Best. A vote on the bells of the surrounding Protestant congregations was intended.

Only two bells (including the angelus bell) are motorized, the other four are rung by hand by the altar boys. The Holy Spirit is the only parish church in the Archdiocese of Paderborn whose full bells are still made to ring by hand.

  1. Resurrection bell ( strike : F sharp 1 –2/16): "Resurrection: Alleluia new life" (symbol: risen ). The bell rings at all solemn festivals of the church year and at all important events in the life of the community, such as baptism, marriage and death.
  2. Christ bell (ais 1 −4): "Christ calls: Come all to me" ( Heavenly Jerusalem )
  3. Marienglocke (h 1 −1): "Mary Queen of Peace: Pray for us" ( protective mantle Madonna on globe). The bell reminds of the Angelus prayer in the morning, at noon and in the evening .

Inner courtyard and Mariengarten

In the middle of the inner courtyard, which is formed by the interconnected structure of the church, rectory and rectory, there is a fountain designed by the Bielefeld sculptor Eva Limberg. It represents a column with a flame crown, which commemorates the Pentecost event. The water flows from four heads, which symbolize the four evangelists.

From the inner courtyard, through the entrance glass door of the parish hall, you can see a statue carved from a single piece of wood from the first Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Wellensiek, created by the sculptor Hubert Hartmann from Rheda-Wiedenbrück . It represents a seated Mother of God , who holds the baby Jesus, who is blessing with her hand, on her lap.

Behind the church and parsonage there is a Mariengarten with numerous plants whose names are connected to Mary: Madonna lily , Mariengras , Mary tears ( sundew and wild garlic are popularly known by this name), Mother of God bed straw , Mary bellflower , milk thistle and others. There is also a small statue that depicts Our Lady with a rose in her hand. The statue was designed by Regina Hohmann from Bielefeld; the execution was carried out by Polish sculptors .
