Thomas Torkler studied architecture at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen) and from 1982 to 1984 under Ernst Kasper (architecture class) at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . In 1986 he acquired the title of Dipl.-Ing. Architecture at RWTH Aachen.

Since the same year he worked as a freelance sculptor in Aachen . At the same time he worked from 1986 to 1991 as a research assistant at the chair for plastic and in the sculpture studio of the RWTH Aachen with Elmar Hillebrand . From 1996 to 2010 he held teaching assignments for plastic design and the basics of design at the Trier University of Applied Sciences , department of design (architecture) and has been teaching at the Academy for Craft Design at Gut Rosenberg in Aachen since 1999, specializing in plastic design. Since 2002 he has been a lecturer at the European Art Academy in Trier .
