St. Maria Himmelfahrt is a Roman Catholic parish church in Köthen (Anhalt) . The classicist central building was built from 1827 to 1832 according to plans by Gottfried Bandhauer .

history

The construction of a Catholic castle and parish church in Köthen, which has been Protestant since the Reformation , was initiated by Duke Ferdinand and his wife Julie , who converted to the Catholic Church in 1825 .

The ducal building director Bandhauer received the building contract. In 1830 the scaffolding for the bell tower collapsed, killing seven workers. Bandhauer was then fired and Christian Konrad Hengst completed the construction. Since Duke Ferdinand also died in 1830 and a Protestant reigned with his brother Heinrich , the tower was not built.

Duke Ferdinand and, after their death in Vienna in 1848, his wife Julie were buried in the church's crypt .

Since 2010 St. Maria Himmelfahrt has been the parish church of the newly founded parish of St. Maria, which also includes the parishes of St. Anna in Köthen, Herz-Jesu in Osternienburg , St. Michael in Edderitz and Hl. Geist in Görzig .

architecture

The Marienkirche in Köthen is built in antique geometric shapes. The floor plan of a Greek cross is complemented by corner fillings to form a square . The cross arms carry gable roofs ; the western one with the main portal and the eastern one, to which the polygonal apse adjoins, are higher than the northern and southern ones. A squat square crossing tower with a tent roof stands over the crossing .

The white-framed interior is characterized by high barrel vaults , strict pillars and beams and the large clear-glazed thermal baths on the west and east gables.

Furnishing

The high altar made of multicolored Italian marble is a donation by Duchess Julie. Above it hangs a copy of Raphael's Madonna of Foligno , which Pope Leo XII. gave to the church. The modern celebration altar, the ambo and the inlaid floor, designed by Thomas Torkler, are made of Löbejun porphyry .

The organ is a work of the Anton Feith company from 1933. The six-part bell comes from the years 1829 (1), 1966 (3) and 2009 (2).

In 2014/15 the artist Michael Triegel designed two thermal bath windows.
