history
The first written mention as Ezeri comes from June 2nd, 973, as a Slavic settlement the place possibly existed as early as the 6th century.
In 1831 the village became famous for the only serious outbreak of cholera in Anhalt. The epidemic was brought in from Halle (Saale) on March 1, 1831 by a traveler and lasted six days. During this time six people fell victim to the disease.
Until the new formation of the unified community of Southern Anhalt on January 1, 2010, Edderitz was an independent community in the administrative community of Southern Anhalt with the associated districts Pfaffendorf and Pilsenhöhe.
Origin of name
The name Edderitz is traced back to the Slavic word jezerisco , which means, for example, place on the big pond . The name or its spelling changed in the course of history, so today's Edderitz was earlier called Ezerisko , Ezerisk , Izerizike and Esserisk .
Lignite mining
On August 1, 1856, was mine Friedrich Franz promoting lignite opened at Edderitz. The 46 miners extract 72,302 hectoliters of coal in the same year. In 1911, the electrification of the place began with the laying of power cables.
In 1935 it was decided to mine lignite under Edderitz in an open pit. Therefore, from 1938 onwards, 200 houses and farms in the old village were demolished in stages and a new village was built directly north of the open-cast mine.
After the Second World War , the place became part of the Soviet occupation zone and the Leopold concern, which had previously been operating lignite mining, was transferred to public ownership on August 1, 1948 . On July 1, 1958, the open-cast mine was stopped, the briquette factory was closed on June 30, 1966.

coat of arms
The coat of arms was approved by the Dessau Regional Council on March 18, 1993 and registered in the Magdeburg State Archives under the coat of arms roll number 2/1993.
Blazon : "Split with a blue shield base, two golden ears of wheat in front in black, mallets and iron crossed at the back in gold."
The community colors are gold (for agriculture) - black (for mining) - blue (for water).
The typical agricultural and mining symbols contained in the coat of arms refer to the municipality of Edderitz, which was characterized by agriculture and (in the 20th century) by mining. The color blue is a reference to the original lake, to which the name Edderitz goes back (see origin of the name ).
Monuments
- Graves in the local cemetery for 13 Soviet prisoners of war who had to do forced labor in the sugar factory during the Second World War
- Memorial stone in the local cemetery for those who died in the First World War
Economy and Infrastructure
recreation
After open-cast lignite mining was discontinued in 1953, the remaining open-cast mine was turned into a 40-hectare and 40-meter-deep lake, which soon became a popular bathing opportunity in the otherwise poor area. The lake was also used as a drinking water reserve and for drawing irrigation water. After 1990, however, the abstraction of irrigation water was stopped, whereupon the water level rose so much that the stability of the shore zones was in danger.
After extensive renovation work between 2000 and 2003, an outdoor pool was built on the western shore of the lake, which is open from May to September. A hiking trail leads around the Edderitzer See, on the edge of which a geological nature trail has been laid out. The hiking trail around Edderitzer See is also used as a skater and summer biathlon route (with a shooting range for compressed air weapons).
An approximately 6 kilometer long cycle path connects Lake Edderitzer with the district town of Köthen (Anhalt).
traffic
East of Edderitz, the federal highway 183 runs from Bitterfeld-Wolfen to Köthen (Anhalt) .
