history
The first written mention of the place comes from the year 1160. The place name changed several times in the course of history; so Breesen was called as Brezne , Breszna , Brizne and Brecen . The name comes from the Sorbian Breźno (cf. Obersorb. Brěza ) for "Birkenort".
The von Bresen family lived here in the 13th century . As further owners of Breesen or of goods in Breesen are mentioned in a document; 1583 and 1620 von Bilau , up to 1625 von Krage , 1625 and 1636 von Hübner , 1620 and 1636 von dem Werner , 1693, 1698 and 1705 von Wuthenau and up to 1732 von Grothe . In 1732 Prince Leopold bought Breesen and ceded it to the Principality of Anhalt-Köthen .
