Barbara Lee Fredrickson (born June 15, 1964 ) is an American psychologist .

Barbara Fredrickson is Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Senior Scientist at the University's Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Lab (PEPLab). She received her PhD from Stanford University in 1990 . Prior to joining the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she was a professor at the University of Michigan .

She has contributed significantly to the further development of positive psychology and among other things developed the broad-and-build theory .

Awards

Barbara Fredrickson has received numerous awards for her academic achievements. Among other things, she received the Templeton Prize in Positive Psychology in 2000 for the development of the Broaden-and-Build theory, in 2008 the Career Trajectory Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology and in 2013 the Christopher Peterson Gold Medal, the highest award of the International Positive Psychology Association.
