Location of Gellershagen in Schildesche
Stadt Bielefeld

Gellershagen is a district of Bielefeld and belongs to the Schildesche district . The district is northwest of downtown and west of Sudbrack .

Was Gellershagen originally a peasantry in office Schildesche the circle Bielefeld . With the increasing industrialization of the Ravensberger Land , Gellershagen developed into a residential suburb of the city of Bielefeld. The population increased from 840 in 1843 to 2712 in 1925. On October 1, 1930, the majority of Gellershagen was incorporated into the independent city of Bielefeld. The northern part was added to the community of Babenhausen , which in turn was incorporated into Bielefeld on January 1, 1973.

Important streets are Jöllenbecker Straße, Am Brodhagen, Schloßhofstraße and Voltmannstraße. The district is characterized by loosely built residential areas that connect to the west and east of the elongated Gellershagenpark through which the Grenzbach flows. In the south of Gellershagen, near the city center, the Schloßhofbach flows in a north-easterly direction. In the north, the Gellershagener Bach flows in a north-easterly and easterly direction parallel to Schuckertstrasse and Voltmannstrasse, at the end of which it is finally taken up by the Babenhausen Brook , which also runs in a northeastern direction .

The city of Bielefeld is not further subdivided into administrative or political units below the ten districts . Districts in Bielefeld are therefore only informal sub-areas, the delimitation of which mostly relates to the area of an old community. For statistical purposes, however, Bielefeld is divided into 72 “statistical districts”. The memory of the exact demarcation of the old community Gellershagen has been forgotten. The area of the informal district of Gellershagen is now roughly understood as the area of the statistical district of Gellershagen. Although the entire south-west of today's Schildesche district belonged to the municipality of Gellershagen before 1930, today only the Gellershagen area enclosed by Drögestraße, Schloßhofstraße, the Schildescher district boundary parallel to Voltmannstraße, Koblenzer and Jöllenbecker Straße is mentioned. The part of the Schildesche district to the southwest with the university grounds and the Bültmannshof and Sieben Hügel residential areas are not part of today's Gellershagen district.
