Makoto Shinkai ( jap. 新海誠 , Shinkai Makoto * 9. February 1973 in Kuomi , Nagano Prefecture , Japan , native Makoto Niitsu ( 新津誠 , Niitsu Makoto )) is a Japanese anime - Director and Animator . He studied Japanese literature .

Works

In 1999 Shinkai released Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko, a five-minute short film in black and white. This has won several awards, including the Grand Prize at the DoGA CG animation competition in 2000. The short film thematizes the life of a cat from its perspective, which it spends with its owner, a young woman.

He then worked as a graphic designer for the video game producer Falcom . From June 2000 he worked on Voices of a Distant Star ( Hoshi no Koe ), which he implemented in about seven months and dubbed it with his fiancée Mika Shinohara ( 篠 原 美 香 , Shinohara Mika ) - but was later professionally re-dubbed.

This was followed by the 90-minute anime film The Place Promised In Our Early Days . This was released nationwide on November 20, 2004 in Japan. Shinkai's next project was 5 centimeters per second and premiered on March 3, 2007. The work consists of three short films called Ōkashō , Cosmonaut and Byōsoku 5 centimeters . The total playing time is around an hour.

In September 2007, Shinano Mainichi Shinbun , Nagano's leading newspaper, published a Shinkai-animated TV commercial . Even after that, he produced short, animated commercials.

In 2011, Children Who Chase Lost Voices (alternative title: Die Reise nach Agartha ) was his longest film to date, as the playing time is around 2 hours.

On May 31, 2013, his film The Garden of Words (Kotonoha no Niwa) opened in Japanese cinemas, for which a 7-chapter manga of the same name was released from April to October 2013, on which Shinkai contributed as an author.

His film Your Name. - Yesterday, Today and Forever ( Kimi no Na wa) was released in Japan on August 26, 2016.

His last film Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) was released in Japanese cinemas on July 19, 2019 .

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year. When decisive works were Your Name. and Children Who Chase Lost Voices .

In addition to his own projects, Shinkai also animated opening credits for minori , a game developer for Japanese adventure games - eroge .
