5 centimeters per second , also 5cm per second ( Japanese 秒 速 5 セ ン チ メ ー ト ル , Byōsoku 5 Senchimētoru , literally: "five centimeters per second") is an anime by Makoto Shinkai with the subtitle a chain of short stories about their distance (about one Series of short stories about their distance from each other ).

The film was completed on January 22, 2007 and had its full-length premiere on March 3, 2007 at the Cinema Rise in Shibuya , Tokyo . In full length because the work consists of three individual short films, the total playing time is about an hour. As with Shinkai's previous works, Tenmon composed the music for the film.

background

Shinkai explained that, unlike his previous projects , 5 Centimeters Per Second should not contain any fantasy or science fiction elements. Instead, the film shows the real world from a different perspective. Makoto's film takes a look at the real problems many people face: time, space, people, and love.

The title Byōsoku 5 Senchimētoru ( five centimeters per second ) is based on cherry blossom petals : As Akari notes in the film, these fall to the ground at about five centimeters per second.

action

The action begins in Japan in the 1990s. Each of the three short films is about a boy named Takaki Tōno .

First film: Ōkashō

Ōkashō ( 桜 花 抄 , German "cherry blossom extract "). After graduating from elementary school, Takaki Tōno and his best friend Akari Shinohara lose sight of each other . Akari and his parents move to Tochigi Prefecture afterwards , while Takaki is waiting for the middle school in Tokyo . Even so, they try to maintain at least a pen pal. In addition to the two special feelings for each other, however, it will soon only be time that lingers.

When Takaki learns that his family wants to move to Kagoshima , he arranges to meet Akari for the last time, as they will live too far apart to visit each other after he has moved. On the day of the meeting, however, a heavy snowstorm breaks in and sets Takaki on his journey. It would be hours before he could reach Iwafune , the place where they had promised to meet.

Many hours late, he arrives at the train station, completely disappointed, but is then more than surprised that Akari is still waiting in the waiting room. Moved to tears, both meet. When the train station closes, they both head towards Akari's house, where they kiss for the first time under a cherry tree. During the snowy night they both decide to spend the night in a small shed.

The next morning they say goodbye and Takaki takes the train home. Akari is holding a letter that she wrote for Takaki in her hands because she did not dare to hand it over to him. Takaki also wanted to give her a letter for the meeting, but he lost it on the way to her.

Second film: Cosmonaut

In the second film Cosmonaut ( コ ス モ ナ ウ ト , Kosumonauto ), Takaki is now in her third year attending secondary school in Tanegashima . The Tanegashima Space Center is also located there . One of Takaki's classmates, Kanae Sumida , from whose perspective this second episode is being told, shows feelings for Takaki, but does not dare to confess her love to him. She later watches Takaki staring into the distance all the time, as if looking for something that seems far away. Her love for Takaki remains as unspoken and unfulfilled as his for Akari.

Third film: Byosoku 5 centimeters

In 2008, Takaki and Akari finally drifted apart completely, each going their own way. Takaki works as a computer programmer in Tokyo and Akari is preparing for their wedding. Takaki's own relationship broke up after three years. Although his ex-girlfriend Risa Mizuno confesses that she still loves him, she felt that she couldn't really win Takaki's heart.

One day Takaki notices the face of a young woman who looks familiar at a railroad crossing. When he turned around again, very confused, to catch another glimpse, a passing train severed fleeting contact. When the train leaves, all you can see is an empty level crossing. Takaki turns away with a smile and walks on.

main characters

Takaki Tōno ( 遠 野 貴 樹 , Tōno Takaki )
Speaker: Kenji Mizuhashi (Japanese), Jan Makino (German)
Takaki is the protagonist of the film. Similar to Akari, he too often has to move with his parents so that they can keep up with the frequently changing jobs. He and Akari became good friends, but the friendship slowly fell apart when Akari moved again. In the end, they both go to different middle schools. Initially, they continue to have at least one pen pal. Then, however, Takaki has to move to Tanegashima and an appointment is made for a - maybe one last - meeting. During his time at school he was a member of the Kyūdō association.
Akari Shinohara ( 篠 原 明 里 , Shinohara Akari )
Speaker: Yoshimi Kondō (first part) and Ayaka Onoue (third part) (Japanese), Esra Vural (German)
Takaki's best friend in elementary school. She wants to go to the same middle school as Takaki, but has to move to Tochigi with her parents after graduating from elementary school. For a while she was penpal with Takaki.
Kanae Sumita ( 澄 田 花苗 , Sumita Kanae )
Speaker: Satomi Hanomura (Japanese), Marie Bierstedt (German)
One of Takaki's classmates in high school. She is in love with Takaki, but doesn't dare to admit it to him. Kanae likes to surf and ride a moped to school. She's not quite sure what to do after school. Her older sister is a teacher at Kanae's High School.

DVD output

The DVD was released on July 19, 2007, according to Shinkai's official website.

A DVD version for North America should be released by ADV Films in December 2007, but was then postponed to March 2008. On February 22, 2011, Crunchyroll released a re-dubbed DVD version, which is distributed by Bandai Entertainment.

The film was released in Germany on June 25, 2010 on the anime label Kazé on a single DVD, as well as in a complete edition with the film Voices of a distant star , also by Shinkai.

Theme song

The theme song One more time, one more chance was written and interpreted by Masayoshi Yamazaki .

This title was also the theme song for Moon and Cabbage , a Japanese film from 1996. Shinkai chose such a famous title because he wanted it to evoke ideas of everyday occurrences. It therefore made sense to him to use a song that everyone knows ("everyone knows about") and that should give his film additional realism.

criticism

“No story about mechas, no story about parallel universes. In his third anime, Makoto Shinkai […] remains stuck with reality in order to recount his favorite topics: of unfulfilled love, of longing and brief moments of happiness. In three short films, he observes his protagonist Takaki and how he changes over the years, from teenager to adult. [...] As in all Shinkai films, the focus is not on the usual suspense. Rather, the stories follow associative images that captivate with their richness of detail and their unusual perspectives and thus enable a new spatial experience, while the omissions in the content, the leaps in time and open ends stimulate thought. Makoto Shinkai's worlds of images and sounds are extremely fascinating. "
