Weathering With You - The girl, the sun touched ( 天気の子 Tenki no Ko , translated: Child of the weather , the official international title: Weathering With You ) is an animated film of the Japanese director Makoto Shinkai , bounded by the animation studio CoMix Wave film realized has been. It followed the masterpiece anime film Your Name. - Yesterday, Today and Forever by Shinkai from 2016. The film premiered in Japanese theaters on July 19, 2019.

The film is about high school student Hodaka Morishima, who moves from his hometown to Tokyo and there meets the mysterious Hina Amano, who is able to control the weather.

action

High school student Hodaka Morishima runs away from home on an isolated island and goes to Tokyo . He quickly gets into financial difficulties and soon goes hungry. He falls asleep outside a bar and is chased away, finding a hidden gun that he thinks is a toy. A girl in a burger shop helps him over a day with a free burger. Eventually, Hodaka found a job with a small editorial office for occult articles run by Keisuke Suga and Natsumi. He doesn't get much money, but has room and board. Since it rains constantly in Tokyo despite the summer, rumors spread about a sunshine girl, which Natsumi and Hodaka are investigating. Eventually Hodaka meets Hina Amano, whom he recognizes as the girl who helped him in the burger shop. He saves them from shady characters and fires the pistol into the air, which turns out to be a real weapon. Hina leads a simple life with her little brother Nagisa and she has a special ability: she can call the sun through a prayer since she was in a small temple and prayed for better weather for her dying mother. Since Hina is looking for an income for the two orphans, Hodaka suggests that they market their ability. And so the three Hinas sell sun prayers on the internet and become little celebrities.

Even during the first research it was said that the sunshine girl was in danger, and now a priest is telling Natsumi and Keisuke about the weather mics that are said to have existed in many places in earlier times. They made a covenant with Heaven, could influence the weather and would eventually have to sacrifice themselves. After a while, they meet Hina and Hodaka, and Natsumi tells Hina about the danger. Together with Hodaka, she has long since decided to end her existence as a sunshine girl. Hodaka has decided to give her a ring on her birthday. But the weather in Tokyo is getting stormier, the traffic soon collapses and the police are also looking for Hodaka because his gunshot was noticed. Keisuke wants to protect himself after being visited by the police and no longer allows Hodaka to visit him. The three youngsters roam through Tokyo, where it is meanwhile storming and snowing, and after a long search find accommodation in a hotel. They spend a wonderful evening together, at the end of which Hodaka presents Hina with his gift. During the night, Hina sacrifices herself so that the weather in Tokyo can finally get back to normal. It dissolves and is gone the next day. Hodaka is desperate and is arrested by the police at the hotel; Nagisa comes to a home. But to get Hina back, Hodaka flees the police station and Nagisa tricked the policewoman in the home. A chase ensues in which Hodaka is supported by Natsumi and Keisuke. Finally he comes to the little temple where Hina became the sunshine girl. He brings Hina back from the sky, even if this means severe storms for Tokyo again. While the two Amano siblings now live in stormy and sinking Tokyo, Hodaka receives a suspended sentence and has to return to his homeland. After three years, he finished school and travels again to the half-flooded Kantō plain , to which people have now got used, and finally meets Hina again.

Reviews

Dinah Zank reviewed the film for Deutschlandfunk , which she calls a “fantastic fable about climate change ”, “a single, huge work of art”. Technically, the work is currently the best animated film, which impresses above all with the detailed depiction of Tokyo in the background. The topic of climate change appears in the film as increasingly heavy rain, as this actually leads to increasingly heavy rain events in Japan. The story connects this with Japanese myths and the love of two sympathetic protagonists. The Süddeutsche Zeitung, however, thinks that Shinkai is not up to the issue of climate change. In particular, the ending must be irritating, in which the love of the two young people has priority over saving the city from the rain. Otherwise the story, a “saccharine-sweet love story”, has a few gaps. Visually, however, Shinkai can convince with breathtaking images and find “impressive apocalyptic images” for climate change. Above all, the portrayal of Tokyo "as a rooted, vital metropolis [...], fascinating and not without danger" shows that the film "is also a declaration of love for the city". The Taz and Aachener Zeitung also praise Weathering With You as a film with and for young people - but also rewarding for adults - "elaborately drawn and equipped with great characters", well balanced between fantasy and romance, with "echoes of a dystopian Present".
