Radwimps ( spelling RADWIMPS ; from English rad "toll" and wimps "Feiglinge") is a Japanese rock band and belongs to the J-Rock genre.

Band history

The Radwimps were founded in 2001 as a five-member school band. Singer Yōjirō Noda and guitarist Akira Kuwahara were among the founding members. A year later they had their first live performances and with the song Moshi mo they won at a high school festival in Yokohama . It was released in May 2003 as a debut single with an edition of 10,000 copies. In the same year, the indie label Newtraxx released their debut album with the band name as the title. This was the first time they made it into the top 100 of the Japanese Oricon charts.

After that, the school-leaving exams were due and the members went their separate ways. Only Yōjirō and Akira continued the band and with the bassist Yūsuke Takeda and the drummer Satoshi Yamaguchi, the final formation of the Radwimps was formed . In summer 2004 they had their first chart single with Kiseki and nine months later the second Radwimps album came back into the album charts. Then the Toshiba EMI label signed the quartet in November 2005.

Two albums later, the band was in the top 10 of the album and single charts for the first time, and from 2008 they regularly reached top chart positions. With the songs Order Made (2008) and Dada (2011) they reached number 1 in the charts twice, three times in a row they reached number two with the albums five to seven. They have been awarded gold and platinum several times. In 2016 they wrote the soundtrack for the animated film Kimi no Na wa (translated "Your Name") and reached the top of the album charts for the first time with the soundtrack album.

On March 11, 2012 Radwimps released a non-commercial memorial song for the first time to the Tōhoku earthquake (made famous by Fukushima ), which had occurred exactly a year earlier. In the following four years they kept up the tradition on this date and released more songs.

The official 10th anniversary of the band was celebrated by the Radwimps in 2015 and on this occasion they also performed in Germany for the first time.
