Your name. ( Japanese. 君 の 名 は。 Kimi no Na wa. , dt. "Your name is.") is the eighth album by the Japanese rock band Radwimps and at the same time the official soundtrack of the anime film of the same name from 2016.
The album was released on August 24, 2016, contains 27 tracks and has a playing time of one hour, twelve minutes and five seconds. Your name. entered the Japanese charts at number one and sold around 58,000 times in the first week in Japan alone . A little later, the album received a gold record in Japan for 100,000 digital units sold.
The album was released in German-speaking countries on November 25, 2016 and was also included in the collector's edition of the film on May 18, 2018.
The songs, which are provided with Japanese lyrics, were later re-recorded in English and initially released digitally on January 27, 2017. A CD release followed on March 10th of the same year.
background
Director and animator Makoto Shinkai first heard about the band in 2007 while he was living in London at the time . As this one from his producer at the beginning of work on Your Name. when asked which artists he is most interested in listening to at the moment, Shinkai named Radwimps. Shinkai asked the band a little later if they were interested in developing and recording the official soundtrack for the film. Shinkai asked the musicians to create the music in a way that “the music should complement the dialogues or monologues of the character”.
The musicians were initially surprised, but agreed to work together. In an article with The Japan Times , the musicians said that working on the instrumental pieces was particularly complicated. The development and conception of the piece First View of Tokyo took several months, as the film producer kept asking for small changes to the song, while singer Yōjirō Noda found the original version best.
The four pieces Dream Lantern , Zenzenzense , Sparkle and Nandemonaiya were later re-recorded in English and published at the end of January 2017, initially on a digital level, and almost two months later on CD.
The original drummer Satoshi Yamaguchi was not involved in the production of the album due to a protracted nerve disease, but was replaced by a guest musician. While the soundtrack was being made, the musicians worked in parallel on the ninth album Human Bloom , which was released in the same year and was also able to enter the national album charts at number one .
Together with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra , the Radwimps played a special concert on December 4th and 5th, 2017 in front of 10,000 visitors in the Tokyo International Forum , where the complete soundtrack was performed. This two-day event was recorded and released on DVD and Blu-Ray on April 18, 2018 .
