Since it was first awarded in 1978, the Japanese Academy Awards have honored the best composers in the Best Music category ( Japanese 最 優秀 音 楽 賞 , sai yūshū ongaku shō ).
1981 was the only year in which four instead of five nominations were announced. The most successful composer in this category is Joe Hisaishi , who was nominated nine times and won five times. Hisaishi, who is considered to be one of the most productive Japanese film music composers, was nominated for up to five films in one year and was mainly considered for his work on Takeshi Kitano's directorial work . The second most successful is Masaru Satō , who was nominated most often with twelve nominations and won four times.
The films are listed according to the year in which they were awarded.
