action

After a long time, Shinji meets a familiar face. It's none other than Masaru, his classmate and buddy, with whom he kept doing nonsense with in high school . Both used to be inseparable. No matter what Masaru did, be it playing pranks on the teachers, sneaking into the adult cinema or stealing money from classmates, Shinji was always there.

Since they don't get very far at school, they both try other areas as well, but the plan to become a stand-up comedian is quickly abandoned. Both then start out as boxers in a boxing club. But it turns out early on that Shinji is clearly the more talented of the two. While Shinji has a great career as a boxer ahead, Masaru gives up boxing and joins the yakuza. Both have great success in parallel and climb the career ladder. However, Shinji, left alone by Masaru, looks for a new person to hang onto. But this seduces him to alcohol and doping substances, so that Shinji loses boxing and his career is over. The same goes for Masaru, whose excessive self-confidence and the resulting lack of respect for the top yakuza boss is his undoing.

In the end, both are left with nothing. As in the old days, they both cycle to their former schoolyard, where Shinji asks if that would be the end of the two, but Masaru replies that they had not even started. The film ends with this optimistic outlook.

History of origin

Takeshi Kitano started the film after having a motorcycle accident in 1995 that paralyzed one side of his body. After an operation and therapy, he wanted to show that he would not withdraw, but would continue to make films. However, this experience changed him and his work; he said, “In my previous films, death was the answer to the questions the characters asked; they were looking for the right way to die. In this film they choose to live, but they still have no answers to their questions; life is sometimes the more difficult choice. "

reception

The film was released in Japanese theaters on July 27, 1996. In the following months it was shown at several film festivals around the world, including the Toronto Film Festival . Cinema releases in European and Asian countries followed by 2000. While it did not appear in cinemas in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, it was seen 24,699 times in France. Kids Return was released on DVD in Japan in 1999 and in Great Britain in 2000.

Reviews

( Following his 1995 brush with death in the form of a motorcycle accident, actor / comedian / writer / director Takeshi Kitano spins this wistful - if bleak - tale about a pair of high school buddies and their inevitable slide into adulthood. )
