Katsumi Yanagishima

Katsumi Yanagishima ( Japanese柳 島 克己Yanagishima Katsumi ; born August 13, 1950 in Gifu , Japan ) is a Japanese cameraman .

He completed his photography studies at the Tōkyō Kōgei Daigaku in 1971 . He had his first camera work with the film Sailor fuku to kikanjū by director Haruki Kadokawa from 1982. After working on Tōru Murakawa's Mottomo abunai Keiji and Izō Hashimoto's CF Girl , he began working with Takeshi Kitano in 1990 and has been a cameraman ever since all of Kitano's directorial work, except for Hana-Bi , where Hideo Yamamoto replaced him. For Kitano's drama Kids Return , he was named Best Cinematographer at the 1997 Yokohama Film Festival .

For Isao Yukisada's romantic drama Go , Yanagishima won the 2002 Japanese Academy Award for Best Cinematography . In the same category he was nominated for Kitanos Dolls the following year . In 2004 he was awarded the same prize for Zatoichi - The Blind Samurai . With the latter film he was also represented in the competition of the Polish camera film festival Camerimage , but had to admit defeat to Dick Pope , who was awarded for Vera Drake .
