The P1 is a discotheque in the Munich district of Altstadt-Lehel , which positions itself as a noble and celebrity discotheque and has become known.

History and venue

The P1 was founded in 1949 as an officers' club for the US occupation forces after the Second World War in the east wing of the Haus der Kunst . The name of the club is derived from the address Prinzregentenstrasse  1, where it is located. The Americans found it difficult to pronounce and simply called the base "P-One". In the 1960s, a Greek named "Alecco" took over the business and the officers' club was named "Artist's Studio". In the early 1980s, the venue then housed a New Wave club.

Use as a disco

Michael Käfer received the nightclub on March 20, 1984 from his father Gerd Käfer , converted it into a discotheque and called it P1. It was later moved to the basement of the Haus der Kunst and, under the organizers Klaus Gunschmann, Norbert Schmitz and Roman Libbertz, became known throughout Germany through the presence of international celebrities, sensational theme parties, scandals and artificial supply shortages caused by authoritarian bouncers. The numerous celebrities who visited the P1 during its heyday in the 1980s included Tina Turner , Whitney Houston , Woody Allen , Robert De Niro , Rod Stewart , Helmut Berger , Die Toten Hosen , who were in a P1 Brawl, and Mick Jagger , who was a regular at P1, when he spent months in Munich for recordings at Giorgio Moroders Musicland Studios . The door, which was considered to be particularly tough at the time, also received this call by rejecting prominent guests (“You can't come in here” - “But we're the Scorpions ” - “That's why”).

Modifications from 2002

In 2002 the P1 was extensively renovated and expanded. In 2003 the P1 opened its newly designed rooms by Matteo Thun as the P1 Lounge & Club . Due to further renovations, the P1 temporarily moved to the former theater space of the Haus der Kunst in 2009. During this time, on October 20, 2009, the temporarily limited P1 Bar opened in the west wing of the Haus der Kunst and offered a classic bar. After a comprehensive renovation, the club moved back to its old location at the end of October 2010. In addition to a new bar layout, the club was given a 3-D sound system and a large toilet area, which was designed with tree trunks for the gentlemen. Overall, the P1 consists of the 400 m² club, the self-sufficient salon designed for up to 200 people, and a 600 m², partially covered terrace.

Guests also call the P1 “Einser” (read: “Oanser”) and the salon “Stüberl”.
