Mōryō no Hako ( Jap. 魍魎の匣 , dt. "Crate of nature spirits") is a novel by the Japanese author Natsuhiko Kyogoku of 1995. As of 2007 appeared an adaptation as a manga by Aki Shimizu, in Germany under the title box of Spirits appear . The work was also adapted as a feature film and anime series.

The detective Shūtarō Kiba ( 木 場 場 太郎 ) investigates a mysterious series of murders in which girls packed in boxes are found dismembered. He had previously witnessed the girl Kanako falling in front of a train under unexplained circumstances. She was then taken to a strange hospital. Together with his colleague Fukumoto ( 福 本 ), the antiquarian and priest Akihiko "Kyōgokudō" Chūzenji ( 中 禅寺 秋 彦 / 京 極 堂 ) and the writer Tatsumi Sekiguchi ( 関口 巽 ), Kiba tries to solve the case.

Mōryō no Hako was first published in 1995 by Kodansha in Japan. Several new editions followed. The novel forms the second part of Natsuhiko Kyōgoku's nine-part Hyakki-Yakō cycle.

Manga

Aki Shimizu's manga adaptation was published in the manga magazine Kai von Kodansha from August 2007 to April 2010 . This was followed by an edition in five edited volumes. A French translation was published by Soleil and an Italian by Star Comics . Tokyopop released the manga under the title Box of Spirits from September 2013 to June 2014 in German.

Motion picture

A film based on the novel was released in Japanese cinemas on December 22, 2007. The director was Masato Harada, who also wrote the script.

Anime

Studio Madhouse, directed by Ryosuke Nakamura, animated the novel as a 13-part anime series. Sadayuki Murai wrote the script and Asako Nishida was in charge of character design, which was originally created by Clamp . Hidetoshi Kaneko was the artistic director. NTV showed the series for the first time on Japanese television from October 8 to December 31, 2008 after midnight (and thus on the previous television day ).

On May 22, 2009, Mōryō no Hako: Hako no Yūrei no Koto ( 魍 魎 の 匣 「中 禅寺 敦 子 の 事件簿 箱 の 幽 霊 の 事」 ) appeared on the Blu-ray box, a 16-minute extra episode .

The music for the series was composed by Shūsei Murai . The opening credits are underlaid with Lost in Blue , the closing song is Naked Love . Both titles are from Nightmare .
