KK Kodansha ( jap. 株式会社講談社 Kabushiki-gaisha Kodansha , English Kodansha Ltd. ) is a large Japanese literature - and manganese - publishing with the main office in Bunkyo , Tokyo . Kōdansha publishes both manga magazines and more literary magazines such as Gunzō , Gendai and Shūkan Gendai as well as the Japanese dictionary Nihongo Daijiten . The publishing house annually honors special publications in this category with the Kodansha Manga Prize .
The publishing house was founded by Noma Seiji in November 1909 and in the first few decades published almost exclusively magazines. In 1923 the publisher had its first bestseller with Taisho daishinsai Daikasei , a book about the Kanto earthquake that had just happened .
The publisher's titles are increasingly being brought onto the market digitally. In 2015, 90% of the new titles were also available in electronic formats. In the same year the publisher had a share of the Japanese print market of around 12%.
