Kōdansha Manga Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kōdansha Manga Prize ( Japanese 講 談 社 漫画 賞 Kōdansha Manga Shō ) is an award for mangas . The Japanese Kodansha publishing house, one of the largest publishers of manga in Japan, will award the prize since 1977 annually.

The idea for a first version of the award arose in 1959 when Shōnen Magazine was founded and three awards were to be given for the 50th anniversary of the publisher. In addition to prizes for photographs and illustrations, Kodansha also awarded the Kōdansha Children's Manga Prize ( 講 談 社 児 童 ま ん が 賞 Kōdansha Jidō Manga Shō ) for the first time in 1960 , a prize for Japanese comics drawn for children. The prize, won by Shōtarō Ishinomori and Shigeru Mizuki , among others , was awarded in 1969 for the ninth and last time. Because of the 60-year existence of Kōdansha, however, the Kōdansha Culture Prize ( 講 談 社 出版 文化 賞 Kōdansha Shuppan Bunka Shō ) was awarded from 1970 onwards and various artists and their works were honored in the children's manga category ( 児 童 ま ん が 部門 Jidō Manga Bumon ). This was awarded seven times and in 1976 the award was discontinued.

A third attempt was to be started the following year with the Kōdansha Manga Prize . The prize was awarded every year in the two categories Shōnen (少年 部門Shōnen Bumon ) and Shōjo ( 少女 部門 Shōjo Bumon ). The first prize winners were the manga pioneer Osamu Tezuka for his two works Black Jack and Mitsume ga Tōru , Candy Candy by Yumiko Igarashi and Kyōko Mizuki and Haikara-san ga Tōru by Waki Yamato .

In 1982 one introduced his - or the general category ( 青年 一般 部門 His Ippan Bumon ) and renamed this in 1999, at the 23rd award, in the "general category" ( 一般 部門 Ippan Bumon ). It is considered the most important. The Jidō Manga Bumon ( 児 童 部門 ) category has existed since 2003 , in which mangas for children are awarded. Josei mangas are awarded either in the Shōjo category or in the general category. Jun Fukami received the prize in the general category for Waru and Tomoko Ninomiya for Nodame Cantabile in the shōjo category. His manga are usually also honored in the general category, with the exception of Yuzo Takada 's manga 3 × 3 eyes , which won in the Shonen category. The only special prize awarded so far went to Osamu Tezuka in 1985 for the complete edition of his works published by Kodansha and for his 40 years of work. Only five mangaka have received the Kodansha Manga Prize twice, Tezuka, Makoto Kobayashi , Daisuke Terasawa , Harold Sakuishi and Kaiji Kawaguchi , who even won it for three works - Actor , The Silent Service and Zipang .

The winners will receive a certificate, a bronze statue and prize money of one million yen . A jury, consisting mainly of former award winners, writers and manga artists, selects the winners from several nominees.

As with the Shogakukan Manga Prize , sponsoring by the publisher is sometimes viewed critically because of the possibility of preferring the publisher's own publications. 88 of the 109 mangas awarded so far (as of 2008) are by Kōdansha himself.
