action

Kōsei Arima, a child prodigy at the piano, dominated various music competitions in Japan and became famous among children's musicians, but also controversial. After his mother Saki dies, he has a nervous breakdown at a piano competition, which leads to the fact that he can no longer hear the notes of his piano even though he can hear everything else normally.

Two years have passed since then, in which Kōsei has not touched the piano anymore and only perceives the world in black and white, without atmosphere or color. His best friends, the softball player Tsubaki Sawabe and the soccer player Ryōta Watari, try to cheer him up and arrange a kind of "double date" in which Kōsei meets a girl who brightens up his colorless world again: Kaori Miyazono. The free-spirited 14-year-old violinist, whose playing style reflects her manic personality, helps Kōsei return to the music world by pushing him back to play the piano. She also shows him through her violin playing that, in contrast to the structured and rigid style that Kōsei plays, she appears free and lively. Kōsei also begins to play more freely and the more he does with Kaori, the more he begins to fall in love with her, even if she is apparently in love with his best friend Ryōta.

During a joint performance with piano and violin, Kaori collapses after a moving performance on the stage and is hospitalized. At first, Kaori claims that she is anemic and only needs a routine check-up, but this turns out to be a lie when one sees flashbacks to her past where she has collapsed numerous times.

Eventually, Kaori is released from the hospital and returns to her happy, crazy self, who invites Kōsei to play with her at a gala concert. However, Kaori does not show up on the day of the gala concert, and as her health continues to deteriorate, she begins to give up life. This time around, Kōsei is the one who inspires her to move on after playing a duet with Nagi Aiza, the piano-playing sister of a competitive opponent named Takeshi Aiza. After listening to this tearfully, Kaori decides to undertake a risky operation that could kill her if she fails so that she can play with Kōsei one more time.

Kaori asks Kōsei to take part in the East Japanese Piano Competition and do his best, even if her life-defining operation takes place on the same day. While playing in the finals of the East Japanese Piano Competition, Kōsei sees Kaori's ghost accompany him on the violin and eventually realizes that she died during the operation.

At Kaori's funeral, her parents give Kōsei a suicide note that she wrote to him before she died. The letter reveals that she knew she had not much longer to live and that as a result she became freer both as a person and in her music. She also writes that she had been in love with Kōsei since she was five and was inspired by him to play the violin so that one day she could play with him. Her supposed feelings towards Ryōta were the "Lie in April" (Your Lie in April) , after which the series was named internationally, and it was faked to get closer to Kōsei without emotionally hurting Tsubaki, who also had hidden feelings towards Kōsei cherished. After Tsubaki realizes her feelings towards Kōsei, she approaches Kōsei and promises him that she will be by his side for the rest of her life. Kaori also left a photo of her as a child; recorded at the concert that inspired her; on which you can see Kōsei going home in the background. Kōsei later frames this picture as a souvenir.

characters

main characters

  • Kōsei Arima ( 有 馬 公 生 , Arima Kōsei ) was for a long time a child prodigy at the piano, known as the "human metronome", due to his almost inhuman precision in playing given notes. This precision was a product of his mother Saki's very strict teaching methods. His ability to play the piano with unprecedented rigor and precision resulted in his winning numerous competitions across Japan and even being invited to play abroad. When Saki died, due to the psychological trauma, he was no longer able to hear the notes of his own piano playing and he gave up. Two years later he started playing the piano again after being persuaded by Kaori Miyazono to become her companion. Surprised by her emotional and unrestrained style of play, Kōsei finally falls in love with her. However, he does not admit his feelings to Kaori because he believes she is in love with his best friend Ryōta Watari, which later turns out to be a lie, only meant to get closer to him.
In the spin-off manga Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso: Coda , which gives a glimpse into Kōsei's and Tsubaki's childhood, it is revealed that his inspiration to play so beautifully in his first competition came because he was Tsubaki after their death Grandmother wanted to cheer up.
  • Kaori Miyazono ( 宮 園 か を り , Miyazono Kawori ) is a classmate of Tsubaki. She is a free-spirited violinist who is often criticized by jurors for her unwillingness to strictly adhere to the score at competitions, but receives enthusiastic applause from the audience who hear her play. Kaori first meets Kōsei after asking Tsubaki to introduce her to Ryōta Watari. As their friendship grew, she finally convinced Kōsei to play the piano again, first as her accompanist and later at a piano competition. Kaori has suffered from breakdowns from an unspecified serious illness all her life. At the end of the anime, after her death, a letter to Kōsei reveals that she had asked to meet Ryōta to meet Kōsei, knowing that Ryōta and Tsubaki were good friends of his and that they were five Year of life was in love with him and Ryōta was only a friend.
  • Tsubaki Sawabe ( 澤 部 椿 , Sawabe Tsubaki ) is Kōsei's childhood friend and lives next door in his neighborhood; she treats him like a little brother. She is athletic and a member of the school's softball club. Often dismayed that Kōsei is unable to break away from his dead mother, Tsubaki tries to get him to play the piano again to make a clear decision about his future. She initially denies her feelings for Kōsei, but after going through several stages of emotional denial, she falls in love with him, which she later confesses to him.
  • Ryōta Watari ( 渡 亮 太 , Watari Ryōta ) is Kōsei's and Tsubaki's childhood friend, and he is the captain of the school's football team. He is very popular with girls and usually takes a reckless attitude. However, every now and then he shows himself to be understanding and empathetic. He is interested in Kaori, and when they are together they are shown to act in love, which makes Kōsei jealous. Kōsei later tells him about his feelings for Kaori and he quickly accepts this and gives him advice. Despite his constant remarks about how cute other girls are, he really did care about Kaori and is shown to keep a photo of her on his phone after she dies.

Minor characters

  • Takeshi Aiza ( 相 座 武士 , Aiza Takeshi ) is a pianist of the same age as Kōsei. In various piano competitions, he was almost always among the top three participants alongside Kōsei and Emi. His goal has always been to be able to play the piano as well as Kōsei and to surpass him since he heard him play at a young age. So strong is his determination that Takeshi even gives up an invitation to a piano competition in Europe to compete with Kōsei in Japan. For Takeshi, Kōsei was like his "hero".
  • Emi Igawa ( 井 川 絵 見 , Igawa Emi ) is a pianist the same age as Kōsei who decided to become a pianist after hearing Kōsei play the piano at the age of five. In various piano competitions, she was almost always among the top three participants next to Kōsei and Takeshi. She wants to reach Kōsei through her emotional style of play. It is implied that she has feelings for Kōsei.
  • Nagi Aiza ( 相 座 凪 , Aiza Nagi ) is Takeshi's little sister who pretends to ask Hiroko for help in spying on her brother's rival, Kōsei. She eventually became Kosei's piano student. She often says "cliché" about things Kōsei tells her. After months of teaching, and realizing that Kōsei is much friendlier than her brother described him, she falls in love with her teacher. Together with Kōsei she plays a piano duet that ultimately encourages Kaori not to give up her life yet.
  • Saki Arima ( 有 馬 早 希 , Arima Saki ) is Kosei's strict mother, who demands that he practice the score to absolute perfection, and often beats him for small mistakes. Even if she did not plan to make a pianist out of Kōsei at first, because of his talent and after discovering her fatal illness, she decided to teach him to play the piano. He should find his own style so that he can later live as a pianist after her death. She dies before Kōsei can qualify for the first competition in Europe. She appears frequently in front of Kōsei throughout the series, as a kind of imagination or ghost.
  • Hiroko Seto ( 瀬 戸 紘 子 , Seto Hiroko ) is a nationally renowned pianist and a close friend of Saki from college. She is the one who discovers Kosei's talent in piano playing and suggests that Saki make him a pianist despite her initial disagreement. She blames herself for Kosei's brutal treatment by Saki and his psychological trauma after Saki's death. After Saki's death, she distanced herself from Kōsei for a long time. When Kōsei starts playing the piano again, she returns to him and becomes his guardian and mentor.
  • Koharu Seto ( 瀬 戸 小春 , Seto Koharu ) is a toddler who laughs a lot and the daughter of Hiroko. She enjoys Kosei's piano playing and always wants him to play more and is very attached to him. She usually clings to her mother's side and is loved by both Kōsei and her mother.
  • Saitō ( 斎 藤 , Saitō ) is a baseball player whom Tsubaki used to admire. After moving to high school, he confesses his love to Tsubaki and goes out with her. When they meet, Tsubaki only tells him about her experiences with Kōsei. He later suggests that they split up after realizing Tsubaki's real feelings for Kōsei.
  • Nao Kashiwagi ( 柏木 奈 緒 , Kashiwagi Nao ) is a good friend of Tsubaki who often gives her advice. She managed to break Tsubaki's stubbornness so that she recognizes and admits her feelings for Kōsei. It later becomes clear that most of the advice she gives Tsubaki comes from being a fan of Boys' Love manga, not from personal dating experience.
  • Takahiko Arima ( 有 馬 隆 彦 , Arima Takahiko ) is Kousei's father, who is never seen for most of the series because he is often on business trips. At least in the OVA episode Moments he makes a small appearance.
