The site was started on April 6, 2006 by Garrett Gyssler and belonged to him until 2008. On August 4, 2008, CraveOnline , a men's entertainment and lifestyle website operated by AtomicOnline, purchased MyAnimeList for an undisclosed amount.

In 2015, the Japanese company DeNA announced that they had bought MyAnimeList from CraveOnline and that they would work with the Anime Consortium Japan to broadcast anime via Daisuki . MyAnimeList announced in April 2016 that they have embedded episodes from Crunchyroll and Hulu right on the website. Over 20,000 episodes should be available on the website.

On March 8, 2018, MyAnimeList, in collaboration with Kodansha Comics and Viz Media, opened an online manga store where users can buy manga from the website in digital form . The service was originally launched in Canada , but was later implemented in the United States , the United Kingdom, and a few other English-speaking countries.

The page was inaccessible for several days in May and June 2018 because the website staff took it offline for maintenance work and for data protection reasons .

In January 2019, MyAnimeList was bought by the Japanese eBook and Manga distribution company MediaDo.
