Makoto Raiku

Makoto Raiku ( Japanese 雷 句 誠 , Raiku Makoto ; born August 23, 1974 in Gifu , Gifu Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese manga artist .

During his high school days he won a young talent award from the Shogakukan publishing house and thus had the opportunity to publish it. His first work as a professional manga artist appeared in 1991 with Bird Man . He then worked as an assistant for the manga artist Kazuhiro Fujita ( Ushio to Tora ). His first series he brought out from March 1999 to August 1999 with Newtown Heroes . This series appeared in Super Sunday , a sister magazine of Shōnen Sunday .

Raiku's breakthrough came with his second manga series, Gash! . On this he drew from 2001 to 2008 with great success for Shōnen Sunday . The manga, which is about the fight of a young person and his demon friend against other demons, was implemented as an anime television series with 150 episodes as well as two movies and translated into several languages. Some of the scripts for individual anime episodes and the two films were made by Raiku himself. The book releases for Gash! , of which there are 33 volumes, sold over 22 million copies in Japan. This was followed by the series Dōbutsu no Kuni for which he received the 2013 Kōdansha Manga Prize .
