Kaiji Kawaguchi

Kaiji Kawaguchi ( Japanese か わ ぐ ち か い じ , actually 川口 開 治 , Kawaguchi Kaiji ; born July 27, 1948 in Onomichi , Hiroshima Prefecture ) is a Japanese manga artist who mainly works in Germany with the Manga series Eagle , a political thriller about the presidential candidacy of a Japanese immigrant in the United States of America .

Life

Kaiji Kawaguchi studied at Meiji University in Tokyo. His drawing style is detailed and realistic, his works stand out from other mangas because of his attention to detail even in complex contexts and because of the unusual topics.

Kaiji Kawaguchi's works are his own manga for an older audience and often deal with the problems of morally correct behavior of people in extreme situations. In Chinmoku no Kantai , for example, the commander of a nuclear-armed submarine declares the ship to be independent territory on its maiden voyage. In Zipang , his most extensive work with 43 volumes, the crew of a modern destroyer can be found in the past at the Battle of Midway and are now faced with the decision whether and how they should intervene.

Awards

Kaiji Kawaguchi has received several awards for his work. So he was awarded the 51st Shogakukan Manga Prize in the main category for his series Spirit of the Sun in 2006 . He received the Kodansha Manga Prize three times, in 1987, 1990 and 2002.
