The Meiji University ( Japanese 明治大学 , Meiji daigaku , short Meidai ( 明大 )) is one of the most prestigious private universities in Japan . It has three locations: the Surugadai campus in Chiyoda , the Izumi campus in Suginami and the Ikuta campus in Kawasaki (Kanagawa) .
The school was founded in the Meiji period in 1881 by lawyers Tatsuo Kishimoto, Kozo Miyagi, and Misao Yashiro under the name Meiji Law School as a law school. On April 1, 1920, her university status was recognized and she was renamed Meiji University. Large parts of the campus were destroyed during the bombing of Tokyo in World War II.
Meiji's Film Academy counts directors Takeshi Kitano and Kihachi Okamoto as well as actor Ken Takakura among its graduates. Some famous politicians such as former Prime Ministers Takeo Miki and Tomiichi Murayama are also former students of Meiji.
