Seven Deadly Sins ( Japanese 七 つ の 大 罪 , Nanatsu no Taizai , Eng . "The Seven Deadly Sins") is a manga series by Nakaba Suzuki that has been released in Japan since 2012. It belongs to the genres of fantasy , adventure and action, has been supplemented by a second manga series since 2014 and was implemented as an anime television series in 2014 .

In the region of Britannias the king of the kingdom of Liones is overthrown by the Holy Knights. They take the royal family prisoner and establish a tyrannical government. Elizabeth, the third princess, embarks on a search for the Seven Deadly Sins - seven knights who, ten years earlier, supposedly wanted to overthrow the king and were defeated. However, they should still be alive. On her search she first meets Meliodas, the childish host of a wandering bar. Hawk, the talking pig, is his companion who keeps the bar clean by eating all the rubbish. Meliodas turns out to be one of the Seven Deadly Sins, the sin of anger and leader of the group. You set out to find the other knights and save the kingdom. They meet the other sins: the giantess Diane, mortal sin of envy; the bandit Ban, the deadly sin of greed; the fairy king Harlequin, who is called "King", mortal sin of indolence; the studying Gowther, mortal sin of lust, the beautiful Merlin, mortal sin of selfishness, and the Escanor, blessed by the supreme deity, the sin of pride.

The series has been published since October 10, 2012 (issue 45/2012) in individual chapters in the Weekly Shōnen Magazine published by Kodansha . In addition, the story appears in 41 anthologies so far. Since August 2014, a comedy offshoot has been published in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine under the title Nanatsu no Taizai Gakuen . In addition, a crossover with the series Fairy Tail , as well as specials for Seven Deadly Sins in the magazines Nakayoshi and Magazine Special appeared in October 2013 . Seven Deadly Sins volumes sold over 700,000 copies each in Japan.

A German translation of the series has been published by Carlsen Manga since March 2015, with 32 volumes so far. An English translation is made internationally accessible online by the Crunchyroll online platform . The publisher Pika Édition brings a French, Norma Editorial a Spanish and Tong Li Publishing publishes a Chinese version.

Anime adaptation

Studio A-1 Pictures produced an anime series based on the manga in 2014. The concept was designed by Shōtarō Suga and directed by Tensai Okamura . The character design was created by Keigo Sasaki ; the artistic director was Hiromichi Itō . The first broadcast took place from October 5, 2014 to March 29, 2015 at MBS in Japan. Animax Asia showed the series in English.

The series has been available in German on the Netflix streaming service since the beginning of November 2015. Peppermint Anime secured the rights to publish the series in German on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, and is aiming for a release in winter 2017.

On June 17, 2015, a 24-minute film for the series was released in Japan as an original video animation . The four-part television special Nanatsu no Taizai: Seisen no Shirushi ( 七 つ の 大 罪 聖 戦 の 予 兆 ) followed from August 28 to September 18, 2016 . Netflix published it on February 17, 2017 under the title The Seven Deadly Sins: Signs of a Holy War .

The second season of the series Nanatsu no Taizai: Imashime no Fukkatsu ( 七 つ の 大 罪 戒 め の 復活 ) with a further 24 episodes was broadcast in Japan from January 6 to June 30, 2018. These were published on Netflix from October 15, 2018 under the title The Seven Deadly Sins: The Return of the Commandments .

The music in the series was composed by Hiroyuki Sawano . For the first opening credits, the song Netsujō no Spectrum ( 熱情 の ス ペ ク ト ラ ム ) by Ikimono-gakari was used, for the second Seven Deadly Sins by Man With a Mission . The end credits are 7-seven- by Flow x Granrodeo and Season by Alisa Takigawa . The latter song was also used at the OVA.

The television special features music by Hiroyuki Sawano and Takafumi Wada . The opening credits were underlaid with the song Classic by MUCC and the closing song is Iroasenai Hitomi ( 色 褪 せ な い 瞳 ) by Alisa Takigawa.

Video game

The video game Nanatsu no Taizai Shinjitsu no Enzai ( 七 つ の 大 罪 真 実 の 冤 罪 ) based on the manga was developed by Bandai Namco Games and launched on February 11, 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS . In March 2018, Seven Deadly Sins - Knights of Britannia for PlayStation 4 will be the second title from Bandai Namco Games. On February 5, 2020, the game Nanatsu no Taizai hikari to yami no tatakai ( 七 つ の 大 罪 光 と 闇 の 戦 い ) by the South Korean game developer Netmarble was also released in German under the name Seven Deadly Sins Grand Cross for Android and IOS
