Animax ( Japanese ア ニ マ ッ ク ス , Animakkusu ) is a Japanese satellite television station that was set up by Sony and mainly broadcasts anime . The company is based in the Minato district of Tokyo .

In addition to broadcasting in Japan, the company also has broadcasters in mainland Asia, Latin America and Europe .

History of the company

Japan

Founded on May 20, 1998 by Sony as KK Animax Broadcast Japan ( 株式会社 ア ニ マ ッ ク ス ブ ロ ー ド キ ャ ス ト ・ ジ ャ パ ン , Kabushiki kaisha Animakkusu Burōdokyasuto Japan , Animax Broadcast Japan Inc. ), the station began broadcasting on June 1st in Japan via SKY PerfecTV! Satellite platform. In addition to the partners , the founders also included the well-known producer and production designer of Anime, Yoshirō Kataoka . The company was chaired by Masao Takiyama.

Various Japanese celebrities and artists have been spotted on Animax, including actress Natsuki Kato and Seiyū Yukari Tamura . Animax also organizes various events related to anime and concerts throughout Japan, for example, Animax Summer Fest ( アニマックスサマーフェス, Animakkusu Samāfesu , dt. Asia

Animax has been operating various channels in other countries in South and East Asia with anime programs in the most important regions and languages ​​since 2004. America

In North America, the company has sponsored various events, such as anime festivals. It works there with other companies, such as B. Bandai and Viz Media . Several anime series such as Gundam , The Making of Metropolis , and Love Hina have been broadcast from Sony's Metreon shopping complex in San Francisco .

The Financial Times reported in September 2004 that Sony was planning to work with Comcast , the largest cable operator in the United States . With this partnership and the Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , three Sony channels are to be broadcast in the United States.

Animax began broadcasting its programs in Latin America on July 31, 2005 in Spanish and Portuguese in their respective language areas. The station was considered the largest anime station in the region. However, over time, anime was relocated to nighttime programming, while the prime airtime was occupied by regular television broadcasts. On May 1, 2011, the station was replaced by Sony Spin , and anime programs are to be streamed on the Internet portal in the future.

Europe

In April 2007, Animax began broadcasting in Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This was Animax's first foray into Europe. Channels for Great Britain , Italy , France and other large countries were also planned. A station has already been launched for Spain .

Animax UK

In October 2007, further details of Animax in the UK were announced. Sony Pictures Television's Vice President Ross Hair was quoted by Brand Republic Media Week as saying that Sony was preparing to launch Animax in the UK. Initially as a video-on-demand service alongside other Sony TV channels. Sony also planned to introduce Animax for the free digital television service Freeview, if new frequencies and slots are available. On October 15, 2013, Sony Pictures Television announced that it would launch a UK version of Animax as an SVOD service. Sony Pictures Television also announced a multi-year volume contract with Viz Media Europe to secure exclusive content for the service.

The SVOD service started online on October 24, 2013. It comprised three simulcast series and over twenty archive series, some of which came from the portfolio of the discontinued Anime on Demand UK . Some content was also posted on the Sony Movie Channel's Late Night Anime block. In March 2014, the Late Night Anime block was renamed Animax.

On October 15, 2018, the VoD service was discontinued and subscribers were referred to Funimation NOW UK.

Animax Germany

In Germany, broadcasting began on June 5, 2007 in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse . The broadcast took place in the cable network of Unitymedia and was the first pure anime broadcaster in Germany. Mainly series were shown that had already run on German television, such as Dragonball , Arjuna and X 1999 . From September 1, 2007, Animax could be received via satellite throughout Germany as part of the Premiere Star package , initially from 0:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and from the end of November of the same year all day. Animax was also available from Unitymedia as part of the arenaSAT FAMILY package . From November 25, 2008, Animax could also be received within the Kabel Digital Home package . In Austria , the station was included in the digital pay-TV service of Liwest- Kabel-TV in November 2007 . Animax was broadcast with the German sound, but partly also with the English sound. In Switzerland , the station was included in the German-language basic package “Deutsch +” from the IPTV provider Swisscom in May 2012. On June 30, 2016, Animax ceased linear broadcasting in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and has only been available on demand since July 1, 2016. The logo from the start of the broadcast was also reintroduced, which was used internationally again before the changeover. The on-demand offer is available via Vodafone Kabel Deutschland and Prime Video .

Animax broadcasts almost exclusively anime . Not only productions of the partner companies are shown, but also those of other studios such as Osamu Tezukas Tezuka Productions, Studio Pierrot , Nippon Animation and others.
