Tōei Animation KK ( Japanese 東 映 ア ニ メ ー シ ョ ン 株式会社 , Tōei Animēshon Kabushiki-gaisha , English Toei Animation Co., Ltd. ) is a film studio traded on JASDAQ for the production of anime .

history

In 1948 the company Tōei , which mainly produced real films that ran as supporting films in the cinemas, as well as the animation studio Nihon Dōga KK ( 日本 動画 株式会社 , dt. "Japan animations") was founded.

In July 1956, Toei bought the Nihon Dōga KK, renamed Nichidō Eiga KK ( 日 動 映 画 映 , dt. "Japan animation films") in 1952 and renamed it Tōei Dōga KK ( 東 映 動画 株式会社 , dt. Animations "). Even then, the international name was Toei Animation Co., Ltd. The first anime production of the new studio was the black and white short film Koneko no Rakugaki (English Kitty's graffiti ) by Yasuji Mori in May 1957 .

Toei Animation achieved its first major success in October 1958: Hakujaden ( 白蛇 伝 ) was the first full-length, full-color anime movie. It won numerous international awards and was released as Panda and the Magic Serpent as the first anime in US theaters three years later . In the Japanese original version, all roles were spoken by only two voice actors.

Toei Animation continued to expand its position as the undisputed market leader in the anime sector to this day. In the early stages of the modern anime industry, many well-known cartoonists such as Osamu Tezuka and Oscar winner Hayao Miyazaki worked for the studio for at least a while.

In 1969 the film Nagagutsu o Haita Neko ( 長靴 を は い た in , in the GDR as Puss in Boots , in the FRG as Perix the cat and the three mouse keteers in the rental), whose main character, the cat Pero, since then The studio's mascot is.

In October 1998 it was renamed Tōei Animation KK

Izumi Tōdō

For some works (e.g. DoReMi , Ashita no Nadja and Pretty Cure ) by Toei Animation, Izumi Tōdō ( 東 堂 い づ み , Tōdō Izumi ) is specified as the creator . As with Hajime Yatate from Sunrise, this is not a real person, but a collective pseudonym of the employees at Toei Animation. The name is derived from ei ga Ō izumi Studio, where Ōizumi is the district in which the production studio has been located since January 1957.

Productions

Since its inception, Toei Animation has produced an almost unmanageable number of anime and is connected to many other studios through collaborations. Nowadays, very many anime series that are marketed with a large proportion of additional merchandising items ( Digimon , One Piece , Yu-Gi-Oh! And others) are produced by Toei Animation.
