Crying Freeman

Crying Freeman ( Japanese ク ラ イ ン グ フ リ ー マ ン , Kuraingu Furīman ) is a manga by the Japanese author Kazuo Koike and the illustrator Ryōichi Ikegami . The manga was adapted as an anime - OVA and implemented in three real films.

The Japanese potter Yō Hinomura ( 火 野村 窯 ) comes into possession of a film that shows a murder by an agent of the 108 dragons, the Chinese mafia . When he does not want to hand over the film, he is kidnapped and hypnotized. He completed such a training and is now supposed to kill the 108 dragons himself. The organization names him Crying Freeman and his body is tattooed with dragons.

One of his murders of a yakuza is observed by the beautiful and lonely Japanese artist Emu Hino ( 日 野 絵 霧 ), who he then has to kill. As a last wish, she asks him to have sex with him so that she doesn't have to die a virgin. So it happens that he falls in love with her and does not kill. But now the yakuza are after both of them first. After these are fended off, Crying Freeman wants them to break up. But Emu comes with him to the 108 dragons, marries him and has a tiger tattooed on his body.

When Crying Freeman is supposed to inherit the 108 dragons, he and Emu are tested. After passing the tests, they have to deal with Bái-Yá Shàn ( Chinese  白 牙 扇 ), the granddaughter of the former leader of the 108 dragons who the organization wants to smash.

Publications

The manga appeared from March 1986 to 1988 in the manga magazine Big Comic Spirits published by Shogakukan . He later appeared in six anthologies.

Crying Freeman appeared in English first from 1989 to 1994 with Viz Media and from 2006 to 2007 again with Dark Horse Comics , in French with Glénat and in Spanish with Planeta DeAgostini Comics . There are also translations into Polish and Portuguese. A German edition was published from 1993 to 1995 in 17 volumes by Schreiber & Leser .

Adaptations

OVA

The Toei Animation studio produced a six-part OVA series for the manga. Directed by Daisuke Nishio, Johei Matsūra, Nobutaka Nishizawa, Shigeyasu Yamauchi and Takaaki Yamashita. The character design was created by Kōichi Arai and the artistic direction was taken over by Mitsuki Nakamura. The music was composed by Hiroaki Yoshino. The anime was released from September 1988 to January 1994, the six parts are each 54 minutes in length.

The OVA series was published in English by Manga Entertainment and Madman Entertainment and in French by TF1 Vidéo.

Real films

Three films are based on the manga. In 1990, the films Dragon from Russia ( 紅場 飛龍 ) by director Clarence Fok Yiu-leung and Killer's Romance ( 浪漫 殺手 自由 人 ) by director Phillip Ko were released in Hong Kong .

In 1995 the French director Christophe Gans created the film Crying Freeman - The Son of the Dragon , which was also released in German cinemas.
