Kazuo Koike ( Japanese 小池 一夫 , Koike Kazuo ; born May 8, 1936 in Daisen , Akita Prefecture , Japan ; † April 17, 2019 ) was a Japanese comic book and screenwriter .

Koike had his big breakthrough with the advent of the Gekiga style, which did not dispense with the representation of sex and violence in realistic drawings. His first success was in 1969 the series Golgo 13 drawn by Takao Saito ; Muyonosuke was created promptly . In the early 1970s he went into business for himself and wrote the manga Kozure Okami , which is considered his best-known work , together with the draftsman Gōseki Kojima . This manga was published in German under the title Lone Wolf & Cub at Planet Manga . It is about a Rōnin who travels with his young son as a hit man through Japan during the Edo period.

He achieved further great successes with Nijitte Monogatari and Crying Freeman , among others . The latter was drawn by Ryōichi Ikegami and successfully filmed under the title Crying Freeman - The Son of the Dragon . Was also filmed Lady Snow Blood . All of his manga stories were implemented in drawn comic form by well-known mangaka .

In 2004, Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima received the prestigious Hall of Fame Eisner Award from the jury.
