Hanzō no Mon ( Japanese 半 蔵 の 門 ) is a manga that was written by Kazuo Koike as the author and Gōseki Kojima as the illustrator. The story is told by Hattori Hanzo , whose job it was to serve and protect Tokugawa Ieyasu. The work can be classified in the category of his own .

content

In the middle of the 16th century, the masterful ninja Hattori Hanzo was given the task of protecting the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. This should unite Japan in one nation, but it must be prepared for this task. This includes experiences in politics, but also in love. The story begins when both are still young and accompanies them on their way through many adventures, first sexual experiences, the search for a bride and political intrigues.

Creation and publication

Unlike their other joint works, the manga is based on historical characters, Hattori Hanzō and Tokugawa Ieyasu . The manga was published in Japan between 1972 and 1984 by Kōdansha in Weekly Gendai magazine . The series later came out in 15 edited volumes.

From 2006 to 2009, an English translation called Path of the Assassin was published by Dark Horse Comics . The manga is recommended for ages 18 and over in the United States. Planeta DeAgostini Comics published a Spanish translation.

reception

Jason Thompson calls Kojima's drawing style “unforgivably unsweet” - he made both protagonists look like 40-year-olds even as teenagers - and his line appears more impetuous than in earlier works. The story written by Koike winds through countless, obscene subplots and offers little action. The fans of the older Lone Wolf & Cub and other mangas Koikes may be disappointed, but the stories are entertaining.
