action
An old man named Hoy wants to jump from a tall tower. Gohan cannot allow this and catches him in a fall. After Gohan saved Hoy, he tells of a terrible monster that wants to destroy the earth. There is only one warrior who can kill the monster: Tapion. Hoy wants Gohan to open the music box and free the Tapion imprisoned there.
Neither Gohan nor Goku manage to open the music box. Finally the Dragon Balls are brought together and the sacred dragon Shenlong fulfills the wish to open the music box and thereby free Tapion. Tapion, however, is not happy about his release. Trunks is enthusiastic about the stranger and wants to befriend him. Although Trunks met with rejection, he did not give up and continued to provide Tapion with food in his shelter. On the same day, a giant headless monster attacks the city controlled by Hoy. When a melody sounds, the monster disappears. Gohan and Videl see Tapion, who also disappears shortly afterwards.
Tapion accidentally falls asleep in his hiding place and the upper half of a monster appears, which he can banish with his flute playing. During the night, Hoy visits Tapion and wants to take control of the flute. Trunks is there too, preventing Hoy from getting the flute. Tapion now trusts Trunks to accompany him home.
Bulma learns the story of the monster from Tapion: There was once a ghost on his planet, for which the inhabitants erected a statue after its death. Black magicians breathed life into this statue, which absorbed evil, began to destroy the planet and kill its inhabitants. The spirit left behind the sword and flute that Tapion carries with him. The flute playing by Tapion and his brother brought the monster Hildegarn under its spell and a monk cut it in half with a sword. The lower half of the monster was trapped in Tapion's brother, Minocia, and the upper half in Tapion. As the halves of the monster tried to reunite, the two brothers were each locked in a music box by the monk, which was brought into the universe far apart. Tapion cannot sleep because he can no longer hold the monster in himself. Bulma then builds a bedroom that corresponds in its properties to the music box. Nevertheless, Tapion cannot hold the upper half of Hildegarn in itself. Hoy is actually a black magician who already controls the lower half of Hildegarn and who is believed to have killed Tapion's brother. With the help of the reunited monster, he wants to gain control over the universe. To complete Hildegarn it was necessary to free Tapion from the music box.
Eventually Tapion can no longer hold the upper half of the monster in his body and Hildegarn attains his complete form. The powers of Son-Goku, Son-Gohan, Trunks, Son-Goten and Vegeta are initially insufficient to defeat him. Tapion can briefly absorb Hildegarn completely into his body and asks Trunks to kill him with his sword so that the monster would be defeated. Before Trunks can comply with Tapion's request, Hildegarn breaks out of Tapion again. Even the Trunks and Son-Goten, which have now merged into Gotenks, cannot harm Hildegarn, who transforms after an attack.
Son-Goku finally defeated Hildegarn as a three-time Super Saiyan with the dragon fist (Ryūken). Tapion leaves earth with Bulma's time machine and gives Trunks his sword.
