Dragon Ball Z - The Movie: Revenge for Freezer is the fifth of a total of 15 films that, like the anime series Dragon Ball Z, is based on the manga series Dragon Ball by the cartoonist Akira Toriyama . This 1991 film was followed by the sequel Dragon Ball Z - The Movie: Cooler's Return a year later . Both films were released on DVD in Germany in 2002 . Carlsen Comics brought out the accompanying anime comics in the same year (issues 21-24).

The story begins with a flashback to the annihilation of the Saiyajins by Freezer and the death of Son Goku's father Bardock . The sequence ends with Son-Goku's journey with the space capsule from the planet Vegeta to Earth not going unnoticed.
After Goku defeated Freezer on Namek, he leads a normal life on earth. While he is going camping with his son Gohan and his friends, Cooler learns of the death of his brother Freezer. He swears vengeance on the Saiyan and wants to destroy the earth.
Cooler's followers Salza, Neizu and Doore track down Goku and his friends, whereupon a fight ensues. Finally, Cooler appears, who Goku first thinks is Freezer. When Goku tries to protect his son, he is seriously injured by Cooler, but is able to escape. Gohan brings his father to safety and goes to Master Quince to get Magic Beans . Cooler's followers are still looking for Goku, indiscriminately destroying the environment in order to lure him out of his hiding place. When Gohan is on his way back to his father with his hya dragon, they intercept him. Piccolo now intervenes so that Gohan can bring the magic beans to Son Goku. Piccolo kills Neizu and Doore and engages Salza in a fight until Cooler joins the fight. Gohan reaches his father's hiding place without realizing that he is being followed. The magic beans that are supposed to heal Goku will be destroyed. However, Gohan remembers the single bean that Yajirobi threw him and that he had hidden.
Son-Goku is cured with it and takes up the fight against coolers again. To his surprise, Cooler can transform himself once more than his brother Freezer and thus becomes an even tougher opponent for Son Goku. When Son Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan, Cooler can play one last trump card by forming a giant supernova that threatens to destroy the earth. Goku fends off the attack with a Kamehame-Ha and the energy catapults Cooler directly into the sun. Salza wants to take up the fight again, but is killed by Piccolo with his infernal spiral.
