action

2000 years ago, seven magicians succeeded in locking the devil Piccolo in a rice cooker using the magic Mafuba and thus banishing evil from the earth. However, his student Ouzaru managed to escape.

In the present, the devil is free again and is looking for the seven Dragon Balls to call the dragon Shenlong at the coming solar eclipse . Goku is instructed in the ancient martial arts by his grandfather Gohan and on his 18th birthday he receives a Dragon Ball with four stars as a present. It is not easy for Goku at school, because he is annoyed by his classmates, but has to hide his powers and abilities from them and so he always sticks back.

One day his crush, Chi Chi, who goes to the same school, invites him to a party. While Goku is celebrating, Gohan is attacked by Piccolo and his assistant Mai, who are looking for the seven Dragon Balls. Piccolo destroys Gohan's house and seriously injures him. However, they cannot find the Dragon Ball because Goku took it to the party beforehand. Goku senses that something is wrong with his grandfather and rushes back home. There he learns from the dying Gohan that Piccolo has returned. He advises Goku to turn to his old friend Master Roshi, who would know what to do.

The following day, Goku buries his grandfather and finds Gohan's orange battle suit in the ruins of his home. Suddenly Bulma Briefs appears, who had located a Dragon Ball in the rubble with her Dragon Ball radar. She assumes it is the Dragon Ball that May was stolen from her father's company, Capsule Corporation. After a short fight between Bulma and Goku, the misunderstanding clears up and together they look for Master Roshi and the other Dragon Balls to stop Piccolo and Mai.

Goku and Bulma eventually find the aging martial artist, who also owns a Dragon Ball, on a remote island in his house. You can convince him to join them. Under Master Roshi, Goku begins training to control his Qi . Together they set off to an old combat school that has been well attended since Roshi's last visit. Here Goku meets Chi Chi again, who is training for the upcoming big martial arts tournament. In the further search for the Dragon Balls, Goku, Master Roshi and Bulma meet the desert bandit Yamcha, who now also accompanies them. Together they find a third Dragon Ball. However, time is pressing and Master Roshi visits his former master in a monastery to begin training the Mafuba. Goku also continues to work on mastering his Qi and finally Kamehame-Ha.

Meanwhile, Mai in the form of Chi Chi can steal the three Dragon Balls, which means that the devil Piccolo now has all seven Dragon Balls. The group goes on the trail of the three and can prevent the dragon Shenlong from being called and Piccolo from destroying the world. With the onset of the solar eclipse, Goku transforms into Ouzaru , a giant monkey that Piccolo can control. Bulma and Yamcha are attacked by Mai, but Bulma can stop Mai. Master Roshi now uses the Mafuba to banish the devil Piccolo again in a rice cooker. However, he fails to do this and dies from this deadly technique. While dying, Master Roshis appeals to Goku's real self, who a short time later brings himself back under control and transforms back. In the final fight, Goku defeats his adversary Piccolo with a Kamehame-Ha. The friends call the holy dragon Shenlong and let him revive Master Roshi. Goku and Chi Chi get together and compete in the arena of the martial arts tournament.

After the end credits of the film you can see that the badly wounded Piccolo is being cared for by a woman.

Reviews

Akira Toriyama saw a pre-draft of the film and commented on it, suggesting to fans of the manga that they view the movie's plot as some sort of New Dragon Ball set in another universe. However, he was severely disappointed with the finished version; he wouldn't even name the product Dragon Ball .

“You don't have to understand 'Dragonball Evolution', the film is tailored precisely to the target group, which, thanks to the manga and series in the parallel world - which is more complex than the ' Star Wars ' and ' Star Trek ' universes put together, is very good know. Everyone else will only experience a solid, off-the-peg action-fantasy mix whose backgrounds, transformable characters and plot tricks are beyond comprehension. "

“The story is very reminiscent of the fantasy epic“ The Lord of the Rings ”. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that “Dragonball Evolution” can stand up to comparison with the Tolkien adaptation. Peter Jackson's ingenious staging is juxtaposed with a fantasy adventure designed for the young audience. Thanks to elaborate trick technology, the teen action delivers decent show values, but only below average entertainment potential for the adult audience. Teenagers of both sexes knock each other out with kung fu kicks and throw energy flashes at each other that it's a real joy - of course, you can't take this “ karate kid ” of the 21st century seriously at all. Conclusion: Action-packed fantasy pounding for the young audience. "

"Infantile real film adaptation of the manga / anime franchise, which can at best be recognized by the set pieces, which does not wrest any new impulses from the trivial myth."

Merchandising

The book for the film, like the manga Dragon Ball , was published by Carlsen Verlag .

Based on the film, a computer game was created for the Playstation Portable , but the portrayal of the characters is not similar to the well-known Dragon Ball game series .
