Chow Yun-Fat ( Chinese  周潤發  /  周润发 , Pinyin Zhōu Rùnfā , Jyutping Zau 1 Jeon 6 faat 3 ; born May 18, 1955 in Hong Kong ) is a Hong Kong-Chinese actor . He is a well-known actor in Hong Kong cinema who has appeared in over 110 productions since 1976 and is also very popular in the West.

Life and accomplishments

Chow Yun-Fat grew up in poor conditions in the rural Islands District on Lamma Island in the New Territories of Hong Kong. At the age of eighteen he became aware of a newspaper advertisement and on the advice of a friend, he enrolled in the trainee selection process at the local television broadcaster Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) and was finally accepted as an acting student that same year. As a graduate of TVB's acting training program, he made his debut for the first time in 1976 as a supporting actor for the television station Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) in the television series Hotel (Chinese title: 狂潮 , Kuángcháo , Jyutping Kwong 4 ciu 4 ). In the 1978 television series Conflict ( 奮鬥  /  奋斗 , Fendou , Jyutping Fan 5 dau 3 ) he received good reviews from the audience. With The Good, The Bad And The Ugly ( 網 中人  /  网 中人 , Wǎngzhōngrén , Jyutping Mong 4 zung 1 jan 4 ) a series in 1979, he achieved the breakthrough with the broad television audience in Hong Kong. In 1986 he starred in the film A Better Tomorrow ( 英雄 本色 , Yīngxióng běnsè , Jyutping Jing 1 hung 4 Bun 2 sik 1 ), which was directed by John Woo . In the third part of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series At World's End , he played the pirate captain Sao-Feng from Singapore, in the film The Curse of the Golden Flower the leading role as Emperor of China.

Yun-Fat has been making films in his home country again since 2008.
