The Bund
The Bund [ b internationalnd ] is the internationally better known name of a long promenade in the Chinese city of Shanghai , on the western bank of the Huangpu River across from the Pudong Special Economic Zone . Her Chinese name is Waitan ( Chinese 外灘 / 外滩 , Pinyin Wàitān ).
It has been redesigned in preparation for Expo 2010 since 2008 and extended from 1.5 kilometers to 2.6 kilometers.
As a street district Waitan ( 外灘 街道 / 外滩 街道 , Wàitān Jiēdào ) it is part of the Huangpu district . It consists of 52 houses of different architectural styles and is one of the main tourist attractions in Shanghai. Officially, the Bund is part of the Zhongshan Lu Ring Road ( 中 山路 , Zhōngshān Lù ) and begins south of the Suzhou River and the Waibaidu Bridge ( 外 白 渡橋 / 外 白 渡桥 , Wàibáidù Qiáo ).
etymology
Bund entered the English language from the Hindustani word band , which in turn comes from Persian . In India it generally referred to artificial embankments such as dykes and dams, while in the English treaty ports in China it was used todenotea quay .
history
Originally, a British branch had been built in place of today's waterfront, a little north of Shanghai, which was then still walled. With the increasing colonial trade at the end of the 19th century and the onset of the building boom, land prices rose and taller buildings were erected to save floor space, which led to a remarkable skyline. Since then, the federal government has been one of the most important financial centers in East Asia.
Statue on the Bund
The only bronze statue on the Bund stands near the intersection with Nanjing Lu , depicting Chen Yi , the first communist mayor of Shanghai.
